Leading European defense primes have finally moved on a space merger that had long been in the works. The MoU from Airbus, Leonardo, and Thales to create a leading European player in space will have implications for Europe’s defense strategy. Via Satellite spoke with analysts from Seraphim, Novaspace, and Frost & Sullivan about how the merger will impact Europe’s space supply chain, and how increases in defense spending across Europe were a catalyst for the deal.
“This merger positions the new company as a key partner in Europe’s defense strategy aiming at strategic autonomy and superiority — aligning industrial consolidation with growing defense budgets and geopolitical realities,” Carla Filotico of Novaspace says.
In other acquisition news, yesterday space exploration company Intuitive Machines moved to acquire legacy manufacturer Lanteris Space Systems, recently rebranded from Maxar. Intuitive Machines cited Lanteris' work as a Space Development Agency subcontractor and said the acquisition marks an evolution to become a vertically integrated space prime for national security, civil and commercial customer missions.
