“We’re essentially flying blind in outer space today. Probably the toughest problem that you have in the Space Force is understanding what our adversary’s capabilities and intent are.”

That was a warning from Lee Rosen, retired U.S. Air Force colonel, now CEO of ThinkOrbital, about critical gaps in orbital intelligence. This week during GovMilSpace at SATShow Week, we’ve heard from Space Force and private sector experts about space threats, including how rapidly China is advancing its space capabilities.

Also in this edition, Space Development Agency Acting Director Dr. Gurpartap Sandhoo gave an honest assessment of some of the challenges the SDA is working through, saying the agency is on a “strategic pause” of launches while it works through fixes.

If you’re on-site for SATShow Week, I’ll be recapping this week’s GovMilSpace developments with Defense Daily reporters Frank Wolfe and Cal Biesekcer at 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning in the Space Domain Theater. If you’re enjoying this bi-weekly Focus on Defense newsletter, please forward it to your colleagues. Did someone forward it to you? Sign up here.
