[Via Satellite 05-26-2016] South Korean satellite pay-TV provider KT SkyLife has purchased Ericsson‘s High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) encoders to support its Ultra-HD broadcasts. The deal marks KT SkyLife’s fifth Ultra-HD channel launch to date.

Ericsson encoders support video compression and pre-processing improvements in MPEG-2, Advanced Video Coding (AVC) and HEVC, with advanced compression capabilities for video quality optimization. The solution is expected to improve picture quality by 15 to 20 percent, while using less of KT SkyLife’s satellite bandwidth. This deal is the latest Ericsson compression solution KT SkyLife is implementing; the company also uses the AVP 4000 system encoders and MX8400 multiplexers.

“KT SkyLife is committed to providing the nation’s first multi-channel high-definition TV and 3-D broadcasting services, and continuing its leadership with optimized commercial Ultra-HD TV services. As with our legacy standard and HD services, our Ultra-HD TV services will leverage best of breed technologies to bring our customers next generation immersive TV experiences,” said Han Lee, CTO of KT SkyLife.
