BSkyB Increases Broadband Numbers

By Staff Writer | February 6, 2008

[Satellite Today – 2-6-08] BSkyB now has more than 8.8 million subscribers and more than 1.2 million broadband customers, the company announced Feb. 6. The U.K.-based pay-TV operator added more than 260,000 broadband subscribers in the quarter, which closed at the end of December.
“We think the key to the stock’s performance in 2008 will be broadband and today’s numbers confirm the company’s strong execution,”     Nick Bell, a media equity analyst at Bear Stearns, said in a research note. “Although the proportion of pay/free subs fell slightly to 66 percent from 70 percent, it is still ahead of original guidance of around 50 percent and we estimate breakeven will be achieved before the 2 million customer mark, possibly by the end of September this year.”
BSkyB also added 435,000 households to its Sky+ personal video recorder service, bringing its total number of subscribers to more than 3 million. BSkyB also reduced its churn to 10 percent, the lowest in three years.
