Aegis BMD Group Leaves San Diego For Waters Near Korean Peninsula

By Staff Writer | April 9, 2007

An Aegis-equipped Navy ships group is headed from San Diego into the Pacific to demonstrate support for Pacific Rim allies, the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance (MDAA) stated.

The USS Nimitz (CVN 68) Carrier Strike Group, which includes the cruiser Princeton (CG 59) and the destroyers Higgins (DDG 76), John Paul Jones (DDG 53), and Pinckney (DDG 91), is conducting the mission.

That group set sail after various events in the Western Pacific have concerned U.S. allies.

For example, North Korea in July launched seven missiles, including one long-range missile that failed shortly after liftoff, and the rogue regime also broke its word in prior agreements by testing a nuclear weapon underground.
