By Staff Writer | April 24, 2006

The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) intends to award a sole source contract to Raytheon Missile Systems, Tucson, Ariz., for cooperative development of the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IIA Missile portion of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) System. The procurement will be the continuation of cooperative development efforts between the United States and the Japan Defense Agency.

The SM-3 Block IIA missile is an evolution from the SM-3 Block IA missile. The procurement will include the design, development, engineering and testing efforts, fabrication, and flight round delivery, along with integration of the SM-3 Block IIA missile into both the U.S. and Japanese Weapon Systems on both U.S. Navy Aegis Destroyers and Japanese KONGO-class ships, including integration into launching/canister systems.

Raytheon is the prime contractor for the SM-3 development.
