Satellite Deals Of The Day

By Staff Writer | October 11, 2004
      • The DirecTV Group Inc. [DTV] and News Corp [NWS] announced plans to combine their Latin American satellite TV operations. The arrangement will give DirecTV control of the surviving operation while eliminating a competitor that had both operations losing money.

A series of transactions with Grupo Televisa, Globopar and Liberty Media also will spur DirecTV to reorganize the two existing direct-to-home satellite-TV platforms in Latin America into just one operation. The deal still requires regulatory approval in Brazil and elsewhere in the region but those hurdles ultimately should be cleared, DirecTV management said in a conference call with analysts today. Look for further coverage of this transaction in the Oct. 18 issue of Satellite News.

      • Aerial photography company BlueSky signed an agreement with European Space Imaging to become a supplier of satellite images provided by the Ikonos satellite. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
