The Big Deal Of The Day: NextView Award Goes To Orbimage

By Staff Writer | October 1, 2004

Bethesda, Md.-based National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) chose Dulles, Va.-based Orbimage to receive a NextView contract that calls for the company to provide the U.S. government with high-resolution imagery from next-generation U.S. commercial imagery satellites. The multi-year award, announced at the close of business Thursday, is valued at $500 million.

Thornton, Colo.-based Space Imaging, the losing bidder, was beaten for the initial NextView award last year by Longmont, Colo.-based DigitalGlobe. The NGA was able to obtain additional funding to offer a second contract to one of the other two U.S.-based remote sensing companies and Orbimage emerged from Chapter 11-bankruptcy court protection in time earlier this year to prepare what turned into the winning bid.
