XM Expands NASCAR Offering

By Staff Writer | August 31, 2004

XM Satellite Radio [XMSR] yesterday launched its second dedicated NASCAR channel for fans of the North American stock-car racing circuit. The new station will give fans access to the in-car communications between drivers and their pit crews.

The real value of this type of offering will come as the technology allows satellite radio receivers to be truly portable and usable, much like a Walkman, enhancing the value of the NASCAR experience while fans actually are at the track. This channel was launched just in time for fans to get closer to the action in NASCAR’s new “playoff format” implemented this year to determine the winner of the Nextel Cup.

Given that race fans typically are a dedicated demographic, this enhancement to XM’s exclusive NASCAR coverage could be added incentive for those considering subscribing to a satellite radio service.
