At Press Time: New China Spy Charges

At deadline, Satellite News learned a grand jury in Camden, N.J., indicted the president of Universal Technologies Inc. and his wife, charging them with 46 counts, including an allegation that they handed over component satellite parts to China that the United States uses in military satellite and radar applications.

Teng Fang Li and his wife Nei-Chien Chu, along with several other Universal Technologies employees, were arrested and charged last month. However, only the couple has been indicted. According to court paperwork, the two reportedly sent more than $500,000 worth of “security controlled” component parts to research teams in China — teams presumed to be working on jamming gear.

If convicted, the pair, who pleaded not guilty, could end up spending at least five years in jail, and they could have to pony up at least $250,000 in fines.
