U.S., EU Reach Satellite-Navigation Agreement

By Staff Writer | June 23, 2004

The United States and the European Union (EU) have, according to wire reports, struck a deal that will make the U.S. GPS navigation system compatible with the EU’s planned Galileo satellite-navigation system. The new deal will allow users to access either the GPS or Galileo satellites with a single receiver, or they can access both systems simultaneously. According to reports, the technical parameters will allow one side to jam the signal of the other in a limited area, like a battlefield, without wiping out the other signal entirely. The deal could be signed June 26 at the U.S.-EU Summit in Ireland.
