Stratos Launches Packet Data Service For Smaller Maritime Vessels

Stratos Global Corp. [SGB] launched Mobile Packet Data Service (MPDS) For Fleet F33 as part of the Fleet brand of solutions it offers that use the Inmarsat satellite network for communications. Stratos is targeting smaller maritime vessels for this service, including leisure, fishing and coastal-patrol boats. The service features persistent connectivity at speeds as fast as 64 Kbps incoming from the satellite and as fast as 28 Kbps outgoing from the terminal. Pricing of the service was not disclosed, but users are charged only for the amount of data that is sent and received, and not for the length of time the terminal is connected to the network.
