EGNOS Undergoes Test in China Before Mid-Year Launch

By Staff Writer | February 10, 2004

The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System (EGNOS), designed to improve the accuracy of satellite global navigation systems, is now undergoing tests prior to service launch in the middle of the year in Europe. Carried out jointly by European and Chinese teams, the tests of EGNOS on the Yangtze River were successful.

Alcatel Space, which participated in the testing, is prime contractor for EGNOS. Calling on the U.S. GPS and Russian GLONASS constellations, EGNOS delivers positioning services with greater accuracy for users in Europe. It will be an integral part of the service offering for Galileo, Europe’s planned satellite navigation system, in which Alcatel Space is also a major partner.
