ORCA Develops GPS System for Underwater Tracking

By Staff Writer | January 16, 2004

French firms ORCA Instrumentation and Advanced Concept and System Architecture (ACSA) have developed a GPS Intelligent Buoy (GIB) system designed to track underwater vehicles in real-time.GIB is a new concept to obtain GPS accuracy for underwater vehicle location and tracking.

A control and display unit is used aboard the ship, which can navigate without any constraints since no dunking transducer is needed. The system is managed over the local radio network. GIB can be deployed from small ships as well as large ones and no calibration is required to obtain metric accuracy: the user needs to enter the sound velocity, and real- time tracking is subsequently displayed. Several underwater vehicles can be tracked simultaneously.
