Space Communications Markets Satellite Phones in Japan

By Staff Writer | October 10, 2003

Japan-based Space Communications Corp. (SCC) has begun marketing a portable satellite phone that it developed with Tokyo-based electronics company Hitachi [NYSE: HIT]. The phone enables users to make calls from anywhere in Japan using communications satellites, as well as to send data from PCs. SCC and Hitachi reduced the weight of the phone to 9 kilograms, about one-fourth of the weight of previous models, by miniaturizing the antenna.

SCC will promote the use of the phone in areas where mobile phone reception is often unavailable, such as remote islands, mountainous areas and construction sites.
