SK Telecom To Build Up Satellite DMB Unit
South Korean mobile carrier SK Telecom [NYSE: SKM] has decided to invest 316 billion won ($274.9 million) by 2010 in its new satellite-based digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) business. The satellite DMB service allows subscribers to watch digital television channels via handheld devices, including satellite-tuner mobile phones and personal digital assistants.
SK Telecom and Japanese partner Mobile Broadcasting will launch a broadcast satellite by January 2004. SK Telecom also plans to form a consortium with equipment manufacturers, automakers and terrestrial broadcasters by the end of this year.
