Hong Kong Court Rules Against Satellite TV Pirates

The High Court in Hong Kong ruled Wednesday against five defendants for importing and trading in unauthorized satellite TV signal decoding equipment.

In the ruling, a judge granted an injunction sought by the plaintiffs prohibiting the defendants from trading in illegal smart cards and associated apparatus, stating that such use was “offensive and must be stopped.”

“We hope that this judgment will encourage the government to take further action in enforcing the law on the trade of illegal pay-TV decoders,” said Simon Twiston Davies, CEO of the Cable & Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia. “The latest indications from the government are encouraging.”

The defendants were Gamestar Technology, J.P. Technology, Tongyong Youhe, Li Ka Siu, and Yau Po Satellite Co.
