By Staff Writer | November 6, 2002

The Moscow-based Scientific Research Institute for Radio Communications (MNIIRS) has created a satellite communications system for rescuing ships in distress, lost expeditions or people attacked by terrorists in any part of the world, according to the Russian news agency Itar-Tass. Under the system, as soon as SOS signals transmitted via satellite reach monitoring stations, the coordinates of the emergencies are immediately established, along with information about the nationalities of the people involved. The SOS signals are then transmitted to the nearest rescue station, Itar-Tass explained.
