Boeing, Lockheed Win GPS 3 Study Contracts

The Boeing Co. [BA] and Lockheed Martin Corp. [LMT] won Air Force contracts to conduct architectural studies for GPS 3, the system that will keep U.S. satellite-based navigation services operational through the next three decades.
The two companies will assess architectural alternatives that meet performance requirements while cutting ownership costs. Results from the studies will define the baseline for the succeeding, openly competed, 24-month program’s definition/risk reduction phase. The Air Force plans to award two contracts in 2002, selecting a single company to complete system development and deployment. Initial launches are expected in 2009.
