Qualcomm Inc. [QCOM] of San Diego has joined the SkyBridge LP group of companies planning to build an 80-satellite low-Earth-orbit system for high-speed Internet connections.

It will contribute its code division multiple access (CDMA) technology to the group and will become an equity shareholder and limited partner, the companies said.

“SkyBridge will now have access to important Qualcomm intellectual property and can benefit from the company’s satellite telecommunications experience,” said Pascale Sourisse, president and CEO of SkyBridge.

“Skybridge’s industrial partners will be able to enter into licenses with Qualcomm for its CDMA technology for use in both user terminals and gateways,” she added.

SkyBridge said it will deliver its services through telecommunications carriers and other service providers. These companies will provide their business and consumer subscribers with access to the high-speed, interactive content carried on the SkyBridge system.
