Globecomm Systems Inc. To Supply Ka-band Network In South Korea

Globecomm Systems Inc. [GCOM] of Hauppauge, N.Y., said it has won a $2.4 million contract to supply a new South Korean telecommunications company with a Ka-band earth station network. The contract is the company’s first for Ka-band equipment.

It will provide a hub in Seoul and 15 remote earth stations to AnySat Company Ltd. The companies expect to complete installation of the network by next April, Globecomm officials said.

AnySat plans to transmit streaming video and Internet Protocol data via Ka-band transponders on the Koreasat 3 satellite on a one-way basis from the hub to the remote earth stations.

At least initially, the outlying users will have to rely on terrestrial lines to communicate with the hub. However, an upgrade to provide two-way communications from the remote terminals can be installed easily in the future, Globecomm said.

“This contract demonstrates our ability to operate on the leading edge of satellite communications technology by moving to the next generation of satellites in the Ka-band,” said David Hershberg, chairman and CEO of Globecomm.

“This is Globecomm Systems’ first contract taking advantage of the new bandwidth available in the 20 to 30 GHz frequency range. By providing AnySat with a state-of-the-art, Ka-band network that also has a predetermined upgrade path, we are able to meet their needs now and help them plan for the future,” Hershberg added.
