[Via Satellite 02-02-2015] Philippine telecommunications solutions provider Delnet International has selected Gilat Satellite Networks’ SkyEdge 2 network for 3G and Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) cellular backhaul. The Ku-band network will support 2G and 3G Base Transceiver Station (BTS)/Node B sites for Smart Communications, a wholly-owned cellular network operator and Internet service subsidiary of Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT), as the company transitions away from older and less efficient VSAT solutions.

In addition to the SkyEdge 2 network segment, Gilat is also providing SkyEdge 2 Accent VSATs and related services. The company’s SkyEdge 2 cellular backhaul solution can allocate satellite capacity to sites as required though Dynamic Allocation Multiple Access (DAMA), reducing operating expense, according to Gilat. Using advanced automatic uplink power control, the solution compensates for rain attenuation without requirement more space segment. Most of the VSATs will supplant older Single Channel Per Carrier (SCPC) modems.
