[Via Satellite 07-11-2014] Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) has selected Emerging Markets Communications’ (EMC) Satcom Technologies division to provide a satellite connectivity solution for online banking and internal applications. EMC’s solution will support services for the bank, which has more than 50 million customers.

BRI will use an EMC solution that incorporates the company’s proprietary SatLink Second Generation Digital Video Broadcasting Interactive Satellite System (DVBS2-RCS2) Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) technology. SatLink uses Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) to mitigate the effects of rain fade as well as boost spectral efficiency.

In order to stay connected with its customers across an expansive geography, BRI decided in 2014 to purchase its own satellite. The bank selected SSL to build BRIsat, and Arianespace to launch the satellite in 2016. BRI will own and operate the satellite, which is designed to cover Indonesia, most Pacific Islands, Western Australia and most of China.
