[Via Satellite 07-07-2014] Tour de France organizers have decided to use Globalstar’s GSP-1700 satellite phone for the United Kingdom Stage 3 of the race — a recent addition to the 2014 Tour. Global Telesat Communications (GTC) directed the agreement with Globalstar subsidiary Globalstar Europe Satellite Services. Members of the organizing team, as well as support and emergency crewmembers will make use of the satellite phones in areas with either no access or limited access to cellular networks.

The 101st Tour de France began on Saturday July 5, 2014 and continues until July 27, 2014. The 21-stage race begins in Yorkshire, U.K., and stretches across Europe including Spain and Belgium. The race spans a total of 3,664 kilometers (or approximately 2277 miles).
