[Satellite TODAY 10-09-12] Hughes Network Systems subsidiary Hughes Europe has signed a 10-year contract with M2M value-added reseller Emtele to supply high-availability satellite connectivity services as part of a Smart Grid project for Finnish energy company Elenia, Hughes announced Oct. 9.

Emtele’s broadband FieldCom network service utilizes Hughes’ HN System platform and related satellite services for nationwide coverage. Hughes Europe and Emtele have already implemented the Smart Grid solution under the contract and Elenia has taken the product into full production.
Emtele CEO Hannu Martikainen said the agreement is essential to achieve his company’s strict requirements for connection service availability and quality.
“Electric distribution is a critical national infrastructure,” Martikainen said in a statement. “We chose Hughes Europe because the company’s advanced satellite technology has an unrivalled track record of reliability that is backed by a highly responsive service support capability. Looking ahead, Hughes’ large footprint will also allow us to meet Elenia’s expansion plans and to serve other key customers like them.”
Financial details of the contract were not disclosed.
