[Satellite TODAY 07-12-12] Canadian information solutions firm MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA) has signed a contract valued at approximately $35 million with United Kingdom-based Avanti Communications to provide a Ka-band broadband communications payload solution for the operator’s Hylas 3 satellite, the companies announced July 10.

Avanti aims to use Hylas 3 to provide satellite data communications services covering Africa and the Middle East. The satellite is expected to launch in 2015.
“The award of the Hylas 3 payload to MDA is another testament to our leadership position in Ka-band multi-beam solutions,” MDA Vice President Don Osborne said in a statement. “MDA is delighted to begin work on Hylas 3 to leverage its world-class Ka-band satellite technology in support of Avanti’s continued growth and success.”
