O3b Networks Unveils New Maritime Broadband Solution

By Jeffrey Hill | June 19, 2012

[Satellite TODAY 06-19-12] O3b Networks has launched a new broadband solution that aims to provide cruise ship guests and crew with more than 100 times the average Internet access rates at sea, the company announced June 18.

The O3b Maritime offshore solution was designed to deliver more than 500 Mbps in aggregate bandwidth to a single vessel. The offering deploys dedicated steerable beams to continuously track a ship’s course and to optimize connectivity performance.
“Cruise operators facing increasing competition from luxury shore based resorts no longer need to suffer the performance compromise necessitated by today’s maritime connections,” O3b Networks CCO John Finney said in a statement. “Guests can surf, download, work, watch, speak and stream in the same way they do on land, unlocking new revenue opportunities for operators and reinforcing best-in-brand service in all aspects of the cruise experience.”
