[Satellite TODAY 08-23-11] Bombardier Aerospace has contracted ViaSat to provide airborne communications terminal equipment as part of a new high-speed Internet option on its Global 5000 and Global 6000 aircraft, ViaSat announced Aug. 22.
Bombardier’s ViaSat service option will combine the ViaSat VMT-1500 chipset with EMS’ Aviation CNX-200 router to provide an office-in-the-sky connection for business aviation passengers. ViaSat’s Yonder airborne broadband service will provide global aircraft passengers with full Wi-Fi Internet connections, Virtual Private Networking and voice-over IP (VoIP). The Yonder service provides typical download speeds to aircraft of 1 to 2 Megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of more than 128 kilobits per second (kbps).
“Global business aircraft cabins are specifically designed to provide a highly productive working environment, a key factor in making these aircraft a leading choice for corporations worldwide. EMS Aviation and ViaSat have been leading the charge in the development of communication systems,” Bombardier Business Aircraft Vice President and General Manager Stephane Leblanc said in a statement.
