RSCC CFO: Maritime Deal Part of $1 Billion Russian Capacity Investment

By Mark Holmes | October 11, 2010

[Satellite TODAY Insider 10-11-10] The Russian Satellite Communications Co. (RSCC) signed a maritime deal with Russian public company Yuzhmorrybflot to use RSCC’s VSAT network to deliver satellite communications to Yuzhmorrybflot’s shipping vessels, RSCC announced Oct. 8.
RSCC CFO Dennis Pivnyuk told Satellite TODAY Insider that the deal is an important step for the company’s $1 billion investment program to deliver satellite communications throughout Russia with a new fleet of spacecraft. “Two of those eight spacecraft are direct broadcast satellites that will open the door to wider penetration of DTH services to the Russian population. For broadband, the AM4, AM5 and AM6 satellites will have 26 Ka-band transponders, which will cover the most populated areas of the Russian Federation.”
According to Pivnyuk, RSCC will operate 680 equivalent transponders by 2015, which more than doubles its current capacity comprised of 283 equivalent transponders.
RSCC’s deal with Yuzhmorrybflot will introduce a fleet-wide satellite communications system that will work to provide crew with affordable communication services such as Internet access multichannel TV and onshore vessel management.
“For implementing the project corresponding to world standards in the communications industry, the central station of the VSAT-RSCC network deployed in Khabarovsk has been involved. The station operates via the Express-AM3 satellite (140 degrees East) which enables the VSAT terminals on the whole territory of Eastern Siberia and the Far East to be connected to the network,” Yuzhmorrybflot Director General Alexander Efremov said in a statement.
