Hughes Provides Ku-band HN to Columbia; Expands U.S. Government Network Services

By Staff Writer | September 16, 2009

[Satellite TODAY 09-16-09] Bantel Telecom, a provider of satellite communications in the Caribbean, Central America, and Andean Region, was awarded a contract by Union Temporal Conectando a Colombia to provide Ku-band satellite services utilizing the Hughes HN system, Hughes Network Services announced Sept. 15.
The contract is part of the Compartel project, which is an initiative of the Colombian government to promote telecommunications in remote communities of the country with limited economic resources.
“For Bantel, this contract is key and reflects our solid growth in the region. We believe that our proven experience of more than 18 years, combined with powerful satellite coverage and the versatility of the Hughes HN7000S broadband satellite terminal, offers the best service quality in the region,” said Ricardo Otaola, president of Bantel, in a statement.
Separately, Hughes Network Systems expanded its managed network service offering to include support for government telework initiatives, the company announced Sept. 14.
Hughes said the expanded broadband, security and management services will support incremental telework programs to increase employee productivity and enhanced continuity of operations by ensuring employees remain connected during an emergency. The service will also work to lower costs for government agencies by outsourcing its network services to a single vendor rather than trying to manage an array of providers.
“Telework initiatives are recognized as a high priority by the Obama administration, which has challenged agencies to streamline their operations and spend fewer taxpayer dollars,” said Tony Bardo, assistant vice president for government solutions at Hughes, in a statement.
