By Staff Writer | August 18, 2009

[Satellite TODAY 08-18-09] Vizada and CLS, an environmental monitoring and maritime security services provider, have partnered to provide International Maritime Organization (IMO)-compliant long-range identification and tracking (LRIT) to the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and other flag states, including Vanuatu and Chile, Vizada announced Aug. 17.
The collaborative system is operational and the two partners will manage LRIT communications for the majority of the EMSA’s registered vessels, amounting to 10,000 by the end of 2009. The EMSA is responsible for the management of LRIT data on behalf of the 27 European Union member states as well as Iceland and Norway.
Both companies completed infrastructure upgrades leading up to the deal. Vizada upgraded its teleport in France by installing full-IP access to its Inmarsat-C infrastructure as well as enhanced pre-assigned data report technology. CLS completed the development of an LRIT data center, which processes the report information according to IMO standards and delivers it to the relevant flag authority.
