[Satellite Today – 4-30-08] Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd. has been selected by Synterra, one of Russia’s largest telecommunications operators, to provide a SkyEdge broadband satellite network for use by Russian Post, Gilat announced April 30.
Gilat was chosen for the second phase of Russian Post’s VSAT network following the deployment of an initial SkyEdge network, which covers about 750 sites. An additional 1,000 sites will provide telephony services to citizens in Siberia and Russia’s Far East region as part of Russian Post’s universal service obligation.
The network also will be used for Cyberpost, a Russian federal service that offers broadband Internet access to citizens in remote areas not served by terrestrial communication networks.
