NSR Research Report: Broadband Satellite Markets, 9th Edition

A year ago, the industry wondered what impact the global economic crisis would have on broadband VSAT networking and satellite broadband access services. Today, it can be said that there certainly was a significant slowdown in many markets around the world for broadband VSAT networks over the first half of 2009. Fortunately, sales of VSAT networks strengthened impressively in the last part of 2009 and into 2010, and it appears that recovery here is well on its way for most regions of the world.

Conversely, satellite broadband access services for consumers and businesses needing connectivity to the Internet barely flinched in 2009, illustrating once again that Internet access these days is not a luxury, but a "must have" service. The big news over 2009 and into the current year has generally centered on the ongoing movement of the broadband access market to service provisioning using High Throughput Satellite (HTS) capacity. In many ways, the announcement of Hughes' Jupiter satellite, the purchase of WildBlue by ViaSat, and the reported desire of Australia's NBN Co. to launch Ka-band satellites all point to this undeniable and (nearly) fully accepted trend in the market. Still it should be noted that "HTS" does not have to mean 100 Gbps satellites and is more an issue of cost per bit.

Finally turning to broadband trunking & backhaul services, there is no doubt that the day of reckoning approaches for trunking services in a number of key markets as new undersea cables land and fiber stretches across the landscape. Yet for every trunking client lost, growth occurs in parallel in the backhaul segment for cellular services as well as terrestrial wireless networks. In many ways, the greater issue today facing backhaul, as well as VSAT networking, services is less a fiber or global economic conditions issue than simple access to satellite capacity.

Fully integrating High Throughput Satellites (HTS) into capacity demand forecast

Following on work done in NSR's Global Assessment of Satellite Supply & Demand 6th Edition study, NSR has fully integrated the provisioning of broadband VSAT networking, broadband access, and trunking & backhaul services with HTS capacity in addition to NSR's long standing projections of use of traditional C- and Ku-band FSS capacity for these services. This is of course in addition to highly detailed, region-specific sites/subscriber, service revenues and customer premises revenues (CPE) projections for each application studied in this report.

A high throughput satellite is defined to be any satellite or satellite payload that has at least twice (though usually many times more) the throughput of a traditional FSS satellite for the same amount of allocated frequency on orbit. These satellites can use either Ku-band or Ka-band to provision a service (or other frequency bands in the future) and almost exclusively make use of frequency reuse and multiple spot beams to increase throughput and reduce the price per bit delivered. Further, the cost of the ground equipment/customer premise equipment for an HTS-based service is not a barrier to HTS capacity being substituted for FSS capacity for any commercial satellite application. Beyond the obvious implication that HTS capacity has for satellite broadband access services, NSR also investigates the trends that could develop in using HTS capacity for broadband VSAT networking and backhaul services.

Primary Questions Addressed In This Report Include:

What are the trends driving or restraining growth in the installed base of sites or subscribers for each market?
Which market segments and which regions are most likely to benefit from new demand or expansion of existing services?
Who are the main players in each industry segment, and what have been their key successes in the last year?
What are the revenues to be generated from service provisioning and customer premises equipment sales in each region and market segment?
What is the satellite capacity demand for each service in each region, and how is this being provisioned?
Where is classic commercial FSS capacity being used for service provisioning, and what is the impact of High Throughput Satellites (HTS) on market take-up and capacity demand?

Primary Elements Of The Report Include:

Industry trend analysis including NSR's qualitative assessment of each major market segment
A bottom-up forecasting approach based on detailed site and subscriber data
More than 250 detailed tables and charts
Includes Excel sheets with all key data, tables and charts
Step-by-step methodology
Variance analysis for each market to highlight any changes between the current and prior forecasts is this market

Key Methodology Updates And Critical Resource For NSR's Report Library

The Broadband Satellite Markets 9th Edition continues to make use of a consistent methodology for forecasting VSAT sites, broadband access subscribers, and trunking/backhaul sites. Yet, the methodology is not rigid and has been revisited in key areas as necessary in order to most closely match actual trends in the real world. For this most recent edition, NSR applied a revised methodology specifically for forecasting capacity demand within the satellite broadband access market. The new capacity demand methodology results in the same historical demand estimates; however, it is better in alignment with the worldwide trend of provisioning broadband access subscribers using HTS capacity.

Further, the BBSM 9th Edition study is a critical input into NSR's Global Assessment of Satellite Supply and Demand series of market studies and makes use of key data from the Wireless Backhaul via Satellite,3rd Edition study. This illustrates once again that all of NSR's market research studies are fully integrated into a coherent library of detailed and highly granular research on commercial satellite market.
