Further, new DTH platforms continue to appear with almost startling regularity. NSR maintains concerns about eventual consolidation of DTH players in some countries, and the current economic crisis may be the tipping point to initiate a reshuffling of the DTH market, but the strong DTH players will no doubt weather the storm. The end result of any eventual consolidation, despite a difficult period of a year or two, will probably mean a stronger DTH market in the respective countries as the weaker players are either integrated into the market winners or their capacity goes to help the market leader continue to expand their offer.

On the flip side, high capacity pricing and capacity shortages are having their impact in specific market segments and regions. Not only is MPEG-4 seeing decent uptake, but clients such as video broadcasters have not stopped loading new channels onto existing capacity (and sometimes forsaking a bit on picture quality) in order to make the best use of already paid for resources. This trend was particularly notable in the Western European Ku-band video distribution market, home of some of the world's highest capacity pricing. The recent drive by SES Astra and Eutelsat to develop new video neighborhoods is a clear response to these trends.

North America continues to be the largest market for commercial satellite transponders in the world with an estimated 19% of all leased C- and Ku-band capacity, followed by Western Europe at 13% for the end of 2007. Nonetheless, there is a shift gradually occurring as North America's total share has declined in the last year, while regions like South Asia, the Middle East & North Africa and South America increased. This again illustrates the well documented trends in industry of strong demand growth in these later regions.
