Broadband VSAT networking services, single site satellite broadband Internet access services, and satellite trunking & backhaul services. While single site satellite broadband Internet access services continue to attract the most attention in the industry, the classic broadband VSAT networking market for corporate and government clients in fact generates more revenue and remains the cornerstone of the broadband satellite industry. North America accounted for the largest fraction of installed and operational two-way broadband VSAT sites in 2007. However, other markets are growing rapidly, and NSR expects that Asia could outpace North America within six to seven years given the strong growth coming from government USO, rural connectivity and educational networks.


Some small glitches aside, 2007 was truly an impressive year for single site satellite broadband services and not for the numbers alone. North America continues to have (and will through 2017) the largest number of subscribers for satellite broadband and is also the center of a number of the biggest moves in the industry in the last year, not the least of which being the announcement for the ViaSat-1 satellite. The industry's eyes are now focused on WildBlue and what course of action it will finally take for guaranteeing its future growth. And in Europe, Eutelsat's plans to launch its own Ka-band satellite in its growing competition with SES Astra will be equally important as a second success for single site satellite broadband Internet access services in Europe will almost certainly lead to new efforts, and new spot-beam satellites, for other regions of the world in the coming years.
