GPSFlight, a provider of miniature wireless GPS telemetry, has been selected as a technology provider to Edwards Air Force Base for tracking base personnel and vehicles as they travel in and around the practice bombing range, the company announced Oct. 31.
The GPSFlight tracking system is a combination of base stations, tracker units, and software that can be rapidly deployed to cover large areas, such as military bases and cities. GPSFlight base stations already have been placed around Edwards to provide a low-cost tracking solution without the need for cellular or satellite services.
Using micro transmitters, the system is capable of tracking hundreds, even thousands of people or vehicles at once while updating the control tower with vital location/position data every few seconds, thereby enabling range supervision to have precise locations of all range personnel over the 200-square-mile base.
