SATELLITE 2012: The Center of the Satellite Communications Universe
The countdown has begun!
SATELLITE 2012: The Center of the Satellite Communications Universe opens in just over 215 days, on Monday, March 12, at the Washington Convention Center, for a week of meeting and greeting, learning, building strategy, reviewing new products and services, and creating the future. SATELLITE 2012 will be here before we know it, so it’s time to start planning!
Registration is up and running and the development of panels and events is in full swing. Just about now, we hear from satellite professionals from all over the world, asking if we’ve received their speaker and session proposals. The answer is yes, SATELLITE 2012 has your nominations, and speaker notification will begin soon.
At SATELLITE 2012, host Access Intelligence and its Satellite Group will be back with our content partners, Futron Corp., GVF, MSUA, Northern Sky Research, SIA, SSPI, and WTA. The annual Satellite Finance Forum and other tracks, including our Engineering one-day intensive, kick off the week, followed by the traditional Big Four opening general session with the chiefs of the world’s global satellite systems. We then segue into two-and-a-half full days of discussions on broadcast operations, satellite manufacture, launch vehicle services, the impact of legislation and regulatory moves since earlier this spring, military satcom and other topics.
By popular demand we’ll reprise the CTO Breakfast Roundtable; we’ll have expanded content planned for hosted payloads and for the critical broadcast services sessions. Network security and the threat of service interruption will be covered in detail, with solutions, case studies, and debate front and center.
This is complemented by our opening Welcome Reception to be held for the first time on the exhibit show floor Monday evening, the SSPI Gala, our Via Satellite Satellite Executive of the Year honors and celebration, and other networking opportunities.
All the while, the SATELLITE 2012 exhibition hall will be a veritable beehive of activity as more than 10,000 satellite professionals from all points of the compass get the latest news and the newest technology from more than 325 exhibiting companies. The exhibit hall is nearly sold out, but there’s still time to slip in under the wire with your booth and your team.
My team and I will be waiting to welcome you and your team to Washington, DC, for SATELLITE 2012. If you haven’t done so already, go ahead and register so that we can roll out the welcome mat for you.

Inmarsat, SkyWave Launch IsatData Pro
Inmarsat and its machine-to-machine (M2M) technology partner SkyWave Mobile Communications have launched the IsatData Pro low data rate service for managing and communicating with remote assets, the companies announced Aug. 4.
IsatData Pro, which uses capacity on the Inmarsat-4 satellites, aims to offer payload capacity delivering up to 10,000 bytes to the device and up to 6,400 bytes from the device. In a company statement, Inmarsat said that the IsatData Pro service, “can transmit a 100 byte message in less than 15 seconds, or a 1,000 byte message in 45 seconds — ideal for sending information to drivers operating in high-risk areas, or for the effective use of sensors to closely manage remote equipment.”
IsatData Pro enables M2M applications including: vehicle telemetry information, text messaging to remote workers, maintaining up-to-date driver logs and the remote management and control of fixed assets. SkyWave’s IDP 600 series all-weather data terminals will support the service. The terminals feature integrated GPS, as well as digital and analog ports for connecting sensors to relay data such as fuel levels, engine temperature and speed.
“The M2M market is set to continue its rapid growth globally, but it is currently under-served by services that cannot match the increasing data demands,” Inmarsat Director of Land Services Drew Brandy said in a statement. “By supporting a significant increase in the size of M2M messages, IsatData Pro will provide better visibility of business operations, allow for risks to be managed more effectively, and deliver enhanced efficiencies.”
Spacecom to Launch Ukrainian DTH Platform on Amos-3
Spacecom, the operator of the Amos satellite fleet, has signed an agreement with an unnamed European company to provide satellite services to a new DTH platform that will be marketed to the Ukrainian region.
Spacecom announced Aug. 2 that the multi-year deal holds a potential value of up to $19 million.
The platform will be launched under the Xtra TV brand via Spacecom’s Amos-3 satellite at the 4 degrees West orbital position. Xtra TV will broadcast approximately 100 regular DTH and free-to-air channels as part of its service offering.
“We are continuing to fortify our capabilities as a leading multi-regional satellite operator in Central and Eastern Europe with a focus on the multi-channel DTH market. Concurrently, we are moving ahead with our strategic program to launch three satellites over the next three years,” Spacecom President and CEO David Pollack said in a statement.
ITV Signs Capacity Agreement Extension with SES Astra
SES Astra has signed a long-term satellite capacity agreement with U.K. commercial broadcaster ITV to renew its existing capacity lease and provide additional capacity to support future development with ITV’s channel offering, the operator announced.
ITV currently utilizes six transponders to service the United Kingdom and Ireland at Astra’s 28.2 degrees East orbital position. The new contract will progressively activate three more for a total of nine leased transponders.
“Continuing to exploit our content offer across platforms is a core part of ITV’s Transformation Plan and, in addition to renewing our existing capacity, this new agreement gives ITV additional flexibility for future development and growth on satellite,” ITV CTO Paul Dale said in a statement.
Financial terms of the lease agreement were not disclosed.
Paradise Datacom Unveils LinkGuard Anti-Interference Technology
Teledyne subsidiary Paradise Datacom has released a new technology that aims to allow satellite operators to combat In-band satellite interference.
Paradise Datacom’s LinkGuard will be embedded in Paradise modems as a standard feature. The technology was designed to provide pro-active, 24/7 modem carrier interference monitoring with no disruption to live modem traffic, and without the need for an operator to be present.
LinkGuard also features the ability to identify previously undetected interference from other modulated carriers, tonal interferers, poor cross-polarization rejection, radar jammers and intermittent signals such as WiMAX.
“With LinkGuard, operators now have a critical new weapon to diagnose and resolve link problems from interference under carriers before they impact quality of service and revenues. This pro-active, automated tool will also reduce the cost side of the equation for operators, minimizing diagnostic time and resulting in quicker deployments, lower maintenance costs, less link degradation and less down time,” Paradise Datacom Vice President and General Manager John Restivo said in a statement.
Stratos Deploys StratosMAX 2 Broadband Service for W&T Offshore
Stratos Global has completed deployment of its StratosMAX 2 broadband service for independent oil and gas company W&T Offshore at 29 of its sites in the Gulf of Mexico.
Stratos’ StratosMAX 2 will power various W&T Offshore applications, including procurement, recording production and preventative maintenance. Stratos also is providing W&T with an auto-failover VSAT service, which aims to ensure service continuity to the StratosMAX 2 sites and protect against momentary outages on last-mile connections.
“The StratosMAX 2 advantages of higher speeds and ultra-low latencies over a robust network enable our customers to achieve maximum functionality at the same price they were paying for traditional VSAT service. This economic flexibility will enable customers to expand their networks to include corporate video conferencing, telemedicine and other bandwidth-intensive applications,” Stratos Vice President Gerbrand Schalkwijk said in a statement.
