"The chance to meet key executives and contacts for our current business and potential future opportunities in a single location makes the SATELLITE Conference a must attend for me."

The more familiar and comfortable I become with the Gaylord National Convention Center, the more excited I get about SATELLITE 2010. On its homepage, the Gaylord National promotes itself as offering “everything you are looking for in a vacation, weekend getaway, business trip or just a night out.”
Well, I certainly can’t suggest that your commitment of time, cash, and attention at SATELLITE 2010 can be likened to a “weekend getaway,” but what I can say is that this coming SATELLITE 2010 will be unlike any of its predecessors over the past several years.
Why? Because the location and the venue offer us all a chance to recapture some of the intimacy and sense of connectedness that has always been a core attribute of the world satellite marketplace. The loss of this intimacy, which is still voiced to me from time to time, was a huge concern more than a decade ago when we all happily fell victim to our own shared success and had to move from a sequence of ever-larger hotels around the city to the old Washington Convention Center. That really wasn’t a stellar destination for SATELLITE. Any alumni who remembers the famous year that we were collocated there with the National Flower Show probably still has a mental imprint of an unintended consequence of that unfortunate juxtaposition – the unmistakable smell of fresh fertilizer, tons of it, right next door!
No one ever got excited to go to that first WCC, just as very few folks get a shiver down their spines contemplating another year in the “new” WCC. Don’t get me wrong, the convention center is a versatile and trusted venue that odds are we’ll see again soon. But it just isn’t where we’ll all be for SATELLITE 2010, and that gives us a collective chance to explore, to discover, to reconnect, and to spread our wings a little bit.
I still get a bit tingly thinking about how the SSPI Gala, reception, and after-party will play out in the dramatic surroundings of the Gaylord’s ballroom and indoor overlook. And I can visualize people finding each other more easily as they pass from session to session along the main hall. Indeed, the “unintended consequence” of SATELLITE 2010 may end up being a groundswell of support for the Gaylord as the now and future home of SATELLITE.
We’ll see about that, of course. For the moment all eyes are on preparations for our mid-March rendezvous in a swank new location. SATELLITE 2010 already has exceeded our goals for exhibit floor space (with the remaining booths going fast), pre-registration is tracking ahead of last year’s record pace, and the folks at the Gaylord are bending over backwards to get ready for SATELLITE 2010.
And I am, too! I can hardly wait to see you there, and to hear what you have to say about SATELLITE 2010 as it sets the pace for the world satellite-enabled marketplace.

WTA Going Green at SATELLITE 2010
The World Teleport Association (WTA) launched its Green Teleport campaign, which aims to help its members improve their energy efficiency, slash energy costs and make their energy-dependent businesses more sustainable, the WTA announced Dec. 3.
The initiative includes two events taking place during the SATELLITE 2010 conference in Washington D.C. a members forum meeting which aims to explore the issue and the presentation of WTA's first-ever Green Teleport Award during the event's annual Teleport Awards for Excellence. The organization also released a white paper study titled, The Green Teleport: The Business Case for Sustainability, which outlines resources to reduce costs and carbon and includes a survey of current energy management practices and concerns.
"Teleports spend between $300,000 and $1 million every year to power everything from transmission systems and information technology to HVAC and lighting. Basic operational efficiencies and energy conservation practices can help teleports cut their energy bill anywhere from 20 to 40 percent," said Robert Bell, executive director of WTA, in a statement.
TCS Acquires Mobile GPS Solution Provider
TeleCommunication Systems (TCS) has entered into a definitive merger agreement to acquire Networks In Motion, a Calif.-based provider of wireless navigation solutions for GPS-enabled mobile phones, for an aggregate of $170 million, TCS announced Dec. 3.
Networks In Motion's Board of Directors unanimously adopted the merger agreement and recommended its approval by stockholders. The merger consideration will be paid in a combination of cash, TCS common stock and promissory notes.
"Location-based services are experiencing substantial growth and we believe that this is the right time to invest to strengthen our participation in this space. We believe the combination of Networks In Motion applications with our current offerings of carrier infrastructure and applications for location-based services will enhance our value proposition for this exciting market," said TCS CEO Maurice Tosé, in a statement.
Astrium Wins Four-Satellite Manufacturing Contract
Astrium won a contract worth more than 500 million euros ($749.4 million) to build four satellites for SES, the operator announced Nov. 30.
These satellites, to be designated Astra 2E, Astra 2F, Astra 2G and Astra 5B, will provide replacement as well as incremental capacity for SES Astra and World Skies divisions and allow the release of the existing satellites at two orbital positions (28.2 and 31.5 degrees East).
Three of the new spacecraft, Astra 2E, Astra 2F and Astra 2G, are intended to deliver next-generation broadcast, VSAT and broadband services in Europe and Africa and will carry Ku- and Ka-band payloads at 28.2 degrees East. Astra 5B will be deployed at 31.5 degrees East, extending SES Astra 's transponder capacity and geographical reach over Eastern European and neighboring markets for DTH, direct-to-cable and contribution feeds to digital terrestrial television networks.
The satellites are scheduled for launch in several steps between 2012 and 2014.
Northrop Grumman to Design Air Force Plug-and-Play Spacecraft Bus
Northrop Grumman is partnering with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to design a spacecraft bus with plug-and-play capabilities in order to reduce cost and schedule in developing future space systems, Northrop Grumman announced Dec. 2.
The partnership will see AFRL award Northrop Grumman with an initial $500,000 task order for a six-month study under its Plug-and-Play Spacecraft Technologies program. The company will deliver the study to the AFRL's space vehicles directorate at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M. The task order was awarded under an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract with a ceiling of $200 million.
"Plug-and-play capability could change the way spacecraft are built by shortening industry's response time to customers' mission requirements. It will provide a standard interface for different payload components, much like a laptop computer that immediately recognizes new hardware when it's plugged in," Steve Hixson, vice president of space and directed energy systems for Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems, said in a statement.
SES, Intelsat, Inmarsat Establish Space Data Association
Satellite operators SES, Intelsat and Inmarsat have established the Space Data Association (SDA) in the Isle of Man, the companies announced Dec. 1.
The non-profit, satellite operator-led organization is dedicated to sharing critical operational data in support of satellite operations, improving flight safety and preserving the space environment. ManSat, a space company based in the Isle of Man, will provide administrative services for the association that will be open to all satellite operators and other participants.
The SDA will establish a satellite data center in the Isle of Man, which will aim to provide an efficient, reliable and secure means for participants to share key operations data. The SDA anticipates that its electronic data center will become operational in 2010.
The SDA named SES Stewart Sanders, Intelsat's Tobias Nassif and Inmarsat's Ruy Pinto as its first directors.

The Internet: How Neutral Should It Be?
Thursday, December 17, 2009
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved rules in October establishing openness for Internet connections. The Net Neutrality guidelines expand and codify rules from 2005 that require providers to allow their customers to use whatever devices or online services they want so long as they do not hurt the network. The public comment period closes in late December and surely will provide the FCC Commissioners much to consider. Join Via Satellite along with Millennia Systems President Dan Campbell and Attorney Raul Magallanes to discuss the guidelines laid out by the FCC and their impact on the satellite communications including the pros and cons of the rules for satellite players.Register Now!
