Networking Opportunities Abound at SATELLITE 2010

Scott Chase
The holidays are coming, and already I’m anticipating the happy smiles and contented sighs of my guests. But I’m not thinking about Thanksgiving or Christmas or Hanukkah or Kwanzaa; I’m thinking about SATELLITE 2010 and all the pleasant surprises awaiting attendees who make the trek to the Gaylord National Convention Center on the edge of Washington, D.C., next March 15-18.

The entire place is built for networking, one of the key elements of every SATELLITE show that keeps folks coming back year after year. On a recent field trip, I felt like the proverbial kid in the candy store as I twirled around the Cherry Blossom Pavilion thinking about the SSPI dessert reception and after-party. No gloomy ballroom dungeon for the Gala – the location is beautiful, broad, with a sweeping ceiling, overlook vistas, and a real feel of excitement. It is just what one would want in a party location, with – dare I say it – enough square footage to meander from group to group and friend to friend without knocking elbows or spilling drinks.

For those who attend the Via Satellite Satellite Executive of the Year reception, just wait until you get a load of the Pose Ultra Lounge. If there’s a trendier, more European nightclub venue this side of Paris, I haven’t seen it yet. Room to move, space to meet and greet, the perfect setting for an unforgettable night of celebrating our global marketplace, making new friends, and linking up with old colleagues and current partners.

Speaking of linking up, the Gaylord National literally oozes with places to meet, to eat, and to plan. This year you won’t have to lurk around dark corners in the basement or walk through the weather to find a place for a private conversation or ad hoc meeting. There are alcoves and quiet zones and comfy chairs and couches around every corner at the Gaylord. And restaurants galore, from casual, easy dining to top-of-the-line restaurant experiences, are gearing up to please your palates as well as your schedules.

One thing that people over the years have said they miss about “the old” SATELLITE shows is the sense of intimacy that came with being at an “all-in-one” venue. Well, I can’t promise intimacy among more than 9,300 attendees, but what I can say is this upcoming SATELLITE 2010 at the Gaylord National Convention Center has all the makings of a fabulous conference and exhibition, all under one roof, with tons to do, places to be, and the convenience of easy access to downtown Washington, Ronald Reagan National Airport, and the hotspots of Alexandria’s Old Town.

At SATELLITE 2010 at the Gaylord, along with the knowledge we gather and the contacts we make, we may just once again capture that feeling of togetherness and unity of purpose that has always characterized the professionals of the world’s satellite-enabled markets. One thing’s for certain: We’ll all be together to build a better future for communications via satellite.

I can hardly wait!

Just Announced - the SATELLITE 2010 Opening General Session!

The Big Four: Agenda for the Coming Decade
Tuesday, March 16
8:45 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.
Chief executive officers everywhere have had a tough time weathering the last 18 months, but the road ahead for satellite-enabled communications looks much brighter than it did just a year ago. In this centerpiece opening general session, the top officers of the world’s largest satellite operators chart the road ahead. How much capacity will be enough to satisfy increasing demands for bandwidth and connectivity? What new technology innovations on both the space segment as well as ground equipment sides will keep satellite-enabled communications viable for the next few decades? What are the plans for new on-orbit assets? How will the Big Four maintain their positions at the top of the satellite services pyramid, and what changes can we expect in 2010 and beyond for these market movers?

Moderators: Scott Chase, Chairman, SATELLITE 2010
                       Jason Bates, Editor, Via Satellite

Speakers: Romain Bausch, CEO, SES
                    Daniel Goldberg, CEO, Telesat
                    David McGlade, CEO, Intelsat

Gilat Satcom Signs Multiple Renewal, Expansion Agreements with Intelsat in Africa

Intelsat signed multi-year renewal and expansion deals with Gilat Satcom to increase and enhance domestic networks and broadband services in Africa, Intelsat announced Nov. 10.
Gilat renewed its contract for capacity on Intelsat 901 and Intelsat 702 and secured pre-launch capacity commitments on Intelsat 14 (IS-14) and Intelsat 17, which will be located at 315 degrees East and 66 degrees East, respectively.
