In the worldwide satellite-enabled marketplace, now and then a senior executive of stature and impact reaches a point when it’s time to step down. Such is the case with Eutelsat’s Giuliano Berretta, a superstar at SATELLITE for nearly two decades.
Mr. Berretta relinquishes his duties and title of chief executive officer and hands over the reins at Eutelsat to Michel de Rosen in just a couple of weeks. But we won’t have seen the last of Giuliano – he will remain at Eutelsat as chairman, and that means we’ll all have the benefit of his experience, wisdom, and vision for years to come.
Satellite Group Associate Editor Mark Holmes had a chance recently to sit down with Mr. Berretta to discuss the future of communications via satellite. Not one to be confined to one issue, one country or even one continent, the never-retiring globetrotter took Mark on a tour of topics that reflects the depth and breadth of knowledge one can access at SATELLITE 2010.
On enhanced and 3-D high-definition television, for instance, Berretta continues to predict that prospects will grow: “We see this as a strong future market and have been building up experience and partnerships over the last 18 months.” Regarding emerging regions and new revenue streams, Berretta says, “Our commitment to central and eastern Europe dates back over ten years.” Likewise EMEA: “Africa, along with Europe and the Middle East, is a core part of our overall footprint and is well-served by our range of orbital slots which provide strong coverage and interconnectivity with other regions of the world.”
Then the dynamic Italian waxes on about new capacity, the expansion of C- and Ku-band offerings in region, the pending launch of spacecraft nearing completion, and the promise of new satellites which will “incorporate reach over Africa.”
Berretta believes that a $150 million annual business will be up and running for Eutelsat in Ka-band in five years or less, he’s open to integrating operating satellites from other operators into the Eutelsat fleet, and expects the organization to invest more than $600 million a year for at least the next three years in infrastructure to be positioned “to capture market opportunities as the economy improves.”
The outgoing CEO sums it all up like this: “Our radar is always open to opportunities for external growth which complement our existing assets and can be converted into high profitability.”
This is exactly the formula that SATELLITE addresses every year. The big thinkers, the innovators, the visionaries, engineers, technologists and risk-takers converge on Washington, D.C., to share the wisdom of the ages. At SATELLITE 2010 you can be part of this annual process of renewal and affirmation.
Plan to join us – and Giuliano – in March for the very best week of the year.

The SATELLITE 2010 Conference is full of sessions focused on cutting-edge topics and emerging areas of growth and revenue. Each session is led by a panel of experts in an open forum format so you will have the opportunity to join in the dialogue. Here's a sneak peek at one of the sessions you'll experience at SATELLITE 2010:
Satellite Broadband: Finally a Credible Competitor in the Marketplace
9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
Thursday, March 18, 2010
Long and painstaking efforts by industry and operators are beginning to pay off for satellite broadband. All over the world, innovative systems are penetrating the established domains of cables and ADSL, in addition to serving those customers who have currently no alternative. That this effort has not slowed down despite the global recession is a true testimonial to the resilience and ingenuity of the entrepreneurs involved. Multi-beam operation is now the favored approach. Ka-band is almost universally accepted as the ideal band although Ku-band systems, both old and new, also are holding their own in certain markets. As many as three high-capacity satellites are in production and will soon bring the benefits of lower cost and higher speeds on both sides of the Atlantic. And, finally, the user equipment industry continues to deliver technically and financially attractive products. Leading executives and entrepreneurs will present in this plenary session their views, achievements, lessons learnt and plans for the future.
Moderator: D.K. Sachdev, President, SpaceTel Consultancy

Iridium Enters Mexican MSS Market
The Mexican Ministry of Communications and Transportation has authorized Iridium Comunicaciones de Mexico to operate, provide and sell MSS to business, government and consumer markets in Mexico, Iridium announced Oct. 21.
To support the new services, Iridium has partnered with Spacenet Communications Services de Mexico, acquiring access to Spacenet's integrated communication solutions and a range of voice and data services and applications.
"Mexico is a market requiring broader services than are available today given the country's extensive, open land masses that have no telecommunications infrastructure, expansive coast lines, growing remote industries and the need for effective response tools in natural disasters. It is an honor for Iridium to join the Mexican telecom market, which is vibrant and open to the innovation Iridium delivers. Strong demand for Iridium services has driven our commitment to Mexico," Iridium CEO Matt Desch said in a statement.
Mitsubishi Wins Contract to Supply Orbital With Cygnus Guidance Systems
Mitsubishi Electric Corp. has received a $66 million contract from Orbital Sciences Corp. to supply proximity link system (PLS) components to Orbital's Cygnus spacecraft in order to guide it to the International Space Station (ISS) during nine NASA resupply missions, Mitsubishi announced Oct. 22.
Mitsubishi Electric will deliver the PLS components to Orbital between 2010 and 2014. The deal is of the largest contracts tying a Japanese company to NASA's space exploration program.
The PLS components originally were developed for JAXA's H-2 transfer vehicle, which docked with the ISS in Septermber.
Orbital's Cygnus spacecraft is in development under a Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) Space Act agreement with NASA. A demonstration flight is scheduled to launch in 2011 for a commercial cargo delivery system to ISS, following the retirement of the Space Shuttle in 2010. Eight subsequent missions will transport cargo to the ISS between 2011 and 2015 under Orbital's Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract with NASA.
InSat Orders Satellite Internet Equipment from Newtec
Newtec signed a deal with German Internet service company InSat to provide equipment for a new Internet backbone installation project in the Middle East and Central Asia, Newtec announced Oct. 21.
Newtec will provide InSat with satellite elevation modulators and demodulators for IP trunking applications over satellite in compliance with DVB-S2 standards. The IP links use a 32 APSK modulation and coding scheme.
InSat is implementing this project with a data throughput of nearly 350 megabits per second using three 36 MHz satellite transponders.
In these times of high transponder costs this is an important advantage, especially when you are offering services for economically emerging regions with less purchasing power in relation to the percentage of the population wanting to get connected to the Internet, InSat CEO Valentin Gurinovich said in a statement.
L-3 to Provide GPS 3 Satellite Test Software to Lockheed Martin
L-3 Telemetry-West (L-3 TW), a division of L-3 Communications, has been contracted by Lockheed Martin Space Systems to supply a command, control, communications, and monitor (C3M) system for use in factory testing on the GPS 3 satellite program, L-3 announced Oct. 21.
The C3M software is based on L-3 TW's InControl software, which aims to support satellite test and on-orbit operations. InControl will provide the GPS 3 test executive for Lockheed Martin's factory assembly, integration and test of the satellites.
Financial details of the contract were not disclosed.
GMV Establishes Subsidiary in Poland
Madrid-based space company GMV opened a subsidiary in Warsaw, the company announced Oct. 21.
The office will provide Polish customers with GMV's transportation, space, defense, information and communication technologies.
The Poland market offers great opportunities and strategically. It is also an excellent springboard for further growth in other markets of Central and Eastern Europe, GMV Corporate Development Director Miguel Ángel Martínez said in a statement.
GMV already is implementing advanced systems for public passenger transport networks in Poland, designed to keep passengers aware changes in schedules among the city's buses and trains.
