"The SATELLITE Conference and Exhibition attendees represent a good mix of manufacturers, service providers, customers and government employees. This is probably the most effective satellite tradeshow I have attended. I think it is a must to have a presence if you are involved in almost any phase of the SATCOM industry."

After a long wait, 2010 should finally represent a year of truth for the mobile satellite services, when we see what TerreStar, SkyTerra, Globalstar and perhaps even ICO (now DBSD) have to offer in terms of next generation MSS services.
"In the last month," says Mobile Satellite Users Association president and long-time market analyst Tim Farrar, “we’ve seen Iridium successfully complete its sale to GHL, accompanied by a $160M stock offering, Harbinger make an offer to buy the rest of SkyTerra for $5 per share, while a future bid for Inmarsat remains a possibility, and DBSD lining up new financing and attempting to exit from bankruptcy.”
Which of these transactions will produce the best return for investors and the most-desired services for end-users? Will the greatest success be found in the traditional MSS services offered by Iridium and Inmarsat, the next generation satellite-cellular roaming opportunity targeted by SkyTerra and TerreStar, or the ATC spectrum partnership that DBSD is looking to secure? These are the kinds of questions that market leaders and experts will answer at SATELLITE 2010 next March 15-18.
As we did last year, SATELLITE 2010 is teaming with MSUA to collocate the association’s annual meeting and conference. At SATELLITE 2010 and MSUA-7 you will hear from all of the leading operators about their plans for the future and find out even more detail about the next generation service offerings that are coming to market in 2010. Complementing the views expressed by the companies themselves, MSUA-7 will have panel sessions where leading distributors and equipment providers will share their views on whether MSS is moving into a new era of mass market services or whether the sector is set for a ride that may be nearly as bumpy as its experience a decade ago.
“In addition,” Farrar notes, “this year’s conference will include two new market-focused sessions on next generation broadband services in both the maritime and aeronautical markets. There has been strong underlying demand for maritime and aeronautical broadband even during the worst of this downturn, and Inmarsat is facing ever increasing competition in these markets from both mobile VSAT and Iridium services.”
Join Tim and me and your colleagues from around the world at SATELLITE 2010 and find out how Inmarsat is responding to these challenges, including details of its new Fleet and Swift Broadband products, and which of its competitors are best positioned for the future.
At the same time, you can get completely fortified with the information and knowledge you need to succeed in the global satellite-enabled marketplace. It’s all happening at the Gaylord National Convention Center, just minutes from Washington D.C. Make plans now to be there!

Astrium Wins Contract for Two Satellites and Test Facility in Kazakhstan
Astrium was awarded a contract by Kazakhstan Gharysh Sapary (KGS) to build two Earth observation satellites for the Kazakhstan government and create a joint venture for the construction of an assembly, integration and test facility in Astana, Kazakhstan.
The two satellites will be a high- and medium-resolution imagery satellite. The high-resolution satellite will be provided by Astrium in France and based on the Theos and Formosat-2 platform. The camera will be based on the silicon carbide technology used on all Astrium optical instrument designs. The medium-resolution satellite will be produced by a collaboration between Astrium and U.K. subsidiary SSTL.
"This new space system will provide the Republic of Kazakhstan with access to a wide range of civil applications including monitoring natural resources and agriculture as well as providing mapping data and rescue operation support in the event of a disaster. It will also put the Republic of Kazakhstan at the forefront of current space technology and complement the country’s space heritage, most famous for the Baikonur spaceport. The images from the Earth observation satellites will also be distributed globally by Astrium’s subsidiary Spot Image,” Astrium CEO François Auque said in a statement.
Astrium also received a contract to provide training to technicians and engineers at Kazakhstan facilities. Financial details were not disclosed.
GITSat Awarded Reseller Contract from SatMax
SatMax Corp., a provider of wireless, non-line-of-sight satellite communications products, signed a reseller agreement with Texas-based GIT Satellite Communications (GITSat).
GITSat will resell SatMax satellite communications systems to its Iridium-linked and Inmarsat-linked customers.
GITSat's first order, placed by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute for a SatMax repeater to aid communications within their systems of moorings and buoys, has been paid for and delivered, GITSat said.
Orbcomm, Sierra Wireless Partner on M2M Platform Service
Orbcomm has entered into an agreement with Sierra Wireless to integrate the capabilities of Sierra Wireless's machine-to-machine (M2M) services platform, M2MOperatingPortal, within Orbcomm's web services portal
The partnership aims to enable Orbcomm and Sierra Wireless customers to control their M2M services, devices and communications across multiple networks offered by Orbcomm, including its proprietary satellite network and GSM and CDMA terrestrial networks. The portal also will enable integrated dual-mode services, which creates a single subscriber from multiple airtime subscriptions.
“Comprehensive device management and diagnostic capabilities are critical for anyone deploying M2M solutions and can no longer be considered options. … Partnering with Sierra Wireless takes Orbcomm's capabilities in this area to the state-of-the-art, allowing our customers to remotely administer firmware and software updates, troubleshoot application or connectivity issues and manage all aspects of their data communications," Orbcommm CEO Marc Eisenberg said in a statement.
EMP and Measat Sign Occasional Use Services Deal
Europe Media Port (EMP) and Measat Satellite Systems signed a deal to bring enhanced satellite connectivity between Europe and Asia.
Under the agreement, the companies will offer broadcasters a range of occasional use services and provides connectivity with bandwidth slices from 4.5 to 36 MHz in time increments beginning at 10 minutes. The service will be delivered from a range of European and Atlantic satellites or via fiber networks.
“With this new service, Europe and Asia just got a whole lot closer. Looking at Measat-3/-3a we see a great potential for carrying sports feeds, news coverage and special events between these two major TV markets. EMP can downlink feeds from satellites as far away as 45 degrees West and we sit across several major fiber networks. Our Europe to Asia [occasional use] rates are going to be very attractive,” Christopher Slaney, EMP's director of business development, said in a statement.
Measat-3a, launched in June and co-located with Measat-3 at 91.5 degrees East, has been designed to expand video distribution services across the region from Australia across Asia to the Middle East, East Africa and Eastern Europe.
Noorsat Signs Eutelsat Capacity Deal
Eutelsat signed a multi-year capacity deal with Middle East satellite service provider Noorsat, Eutelsat announced Oct. 1.
The contract is for the lease of three additional transponders on Eutelsat's Atlantic Bird 4A satellite.
Noorsat, based in Manama, Bahrain, offers a broadcasting platform that delivers more than 170 free-to-air and subscription channels.
“By increasing our capacity at Eutelsat's 7 degrees West neighborhood, Noorsat is able to offer its clients extensive coverage of DTH homes in the Middle East. Our expansion is based on the prospect of seeing the number of channels in the [Middle East and North Africa] region increase over the next three years. We are preparing for the expected introduction of HDTV channels and will be offering our customers the capacity they need,” Noorsat CEO Omar Shoter said in a statement.
