SATELLITE 2010: Roadmap to the Future

Scott Chase
New phrases, such as “green shoots,” are coming into the English language these days, along with a hint of better things to come. It’s still a bit early to predict recovery from the economic turmoil of the last 18 months, but if these green shoots take root and spread, perhaps the global satellite-enabled marketplace will have survived this “great recession” largely intact.

What might not be “same old, same old” in the future will be the way the world’s satellite market does business. To take one example, one should consider what former Navy flag officer and expert Lyle Bien terms the “changing landscape of national security satcom.” In the future, Bien predicts, clever satellite operators and spacecraft manufacturers will need to shift the focus away from whatever happens to be available off the shelf in a services and technology sense “toward true integration into the national security infrastructure.” That means commercial providers will need to “design in” features and services desired by the U.S. Department of Defense and other relevant agencies to remain competitive in the fiercely-contested arena of government services.

What impact this will have remains to be debated, but the ongoing and in some ways aggressive shift from government as hat-in-hand window shopping supplicant to specs-driven cash-in-hand customer will reverberate throughout the marketplace as operators battle even more fiercely to get in line for multi-year commitments from a bankruptcy-free cash cow.

In a similar fashion, the launch services arena is changing with the autumn leaves. Sea Launch, always a bold venture, is unhappily perched on shoals of uncertainty. Meanwhile, over on the other shore, the Indians are poised to make noise sooner than later in commercial launch markets, an unfolding development against a not-so-subtle background chant of “the Chinese are coming [again], the Chinese are coming [again].” SpaceX is garnering its share of column inches while market leaders around the world gently press for access to Delta IV and Atlas V, despite the hefty price tags both vehicles sport.

In the global satellite-enabled marketplace, it’s never an issue of what goes around comes around. The market has seen so much growth and so much innovation over the past nearly five decades that it’s an integral part of the world’s communications infrastructure. But the players are changing, imperceptibly in some cases and dramatically in others. You may not need a weatherman to tell which way the wind blows, but you do need a roadmap to the future.

Fortunately, a plan exists: Make plans now to be a part of SATELLITE 2010, the annual gathering of the clan that makes decisions and moves markets. You can’t survive the coming months and years without solid business intelligence, and we’re here to deliver!

SES to Bring Astra2Connect to Africa in 2010
SES signed a signed agreement with Intersat Africa, a provider of satellite-based Internet services, to expand the reach of its satellite-based Astra2Connect broadband service to Africa, SES announced Sept. 11.
The service will start in January 2010 and will be offered to households, small and medium businesses, and schools.
Capacity will be provided by SES World Skies' NSS-12 satellite. Astra2Connect will be sold in ten countries in East and Central Africa including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Somalia, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Astra2Connect's technology manufacturer, Newtec, will supply Intersat Africa with the respective satellite broadband user terminals based on the Sat3Play technology.
"East Africa has recently been connected to the Information Superhighway on submarine fiber, but unfortunately only the users in urban areas will benefit from this Internet revolution. The last mile connectivity is still a challenge and this is where SES' broadband service and satellite capacity fit in. The ASTRA2Connect service also complements our Rural Internet Kiosk (RIK) program which will empower thousands of Africans with high-speed Internet," said Abdul Bakhrani, CEO of Intersat Africa, in a statement.

GeoEye Wins $50 Million NGA Contract Extension
GeoEye Inc. signed a contract worth $50 million to extend its service level agreement with the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) through Mar. 31, 2010, the imagery company announced Sept. 10.
The contract extension gives the NGA continued access to imagery from the GeoEye-1 and IKONOS Earth-imaging satellites.
The company said the extension is covered under essentially the same business terms as the prior agreement. GeoEye signed its initial service level agreement in December, which would have expired Nov. 30, 2009.
"We've made some improvements in the contract that are beneficial to both GeoEye and the NGA. We're delivering millions of square kilometers of imagery to the NGA each month in support of their mission to provide timely, relevant, and accurate geospatial intelligence for national security," said Erol Morey, GeoEye's NGA program director, in a statement.

Intelsat Leases Fleet-wide Capacity to GlobeCast
GlobeCast has leased occasional use (OU) capacity with Intelsat, spanning the operator's entire satellite fleet, Intelsat announced Sept. 9.
The multi-year contract offers GlobeCast increased satellite transmissions infrastructure to fulfill its customer needs for distribution of live sports, breaking news and special events.
GlobeCast said it decided to invest in expanded capacity to meet the growing demand for HD services, sports broadcasting and news coverage. Intelsat has also increased its ability to meet demand by dedicating approximately 140 transponders across its entire fleet specifically to be used for OU services.
"This year, we are on track to handle over 120,000 OU feeds throughout our network," said Jean-Philippe Gillet, Intelsat's European and Middle East regional vice president, in a statement.
Financial details of the contract were not disclosed.

SpaceX Wins Orbcomm Contract to Launch 18-Satellite Constellation
Orbcomm and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) have reached an agreement for SpaceX to launch 18 Orbcomm Generation 2 (OG2) satellites to begin as early as the fourth quarter of 2010 through 2014, the two companies announced.
SpaceX said it plans to launch the second-generation satellites on multiple Falcon 1e launch vehicles, an enhanced version of SpaceX's Falcon 1 launch vehicle.
The California-based launch company will deliver Orbcomm's second-generation satellites into low Earth orbit (LEO) to support its existing constellation of satellites, adding new features, and growing its global machine-to-machine and Automatic identification system services.
"Through this agreement Orbcomm has a strategic launch partner that provides a valuable solution now and in the future," said Orbcomm CEO Marc Eisenberg, in a statement.
Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.
