SATELLITE still at the Forefront of the Global Communications via Satellite Market

Scott Chase
These days, as summer draws to a close, it’s easy to get mired in the bad news and economic “sturm und drang” that bombards us daily, from all market sectors. Recent layoffs at Lockheed Martin and Boeing, for example, swallow up good news about new satellite manufacturing contracts and initiatives at those same companies. A launch failure in one part of the world seems more powerful than successful missions throughout the year.

For the global satellite-enabled marketplace, we’ve always been fortunate to turn bad news on its ear, and literally four-and-a-half decades of stellar growth bear witness to this fabulous track record. Despite stock market flux, satellite remains a strong player and a critical component in the world’s communications infrastructure.

And that keeps SATELLITE 2010 and its successors at the top of the list of “must do” events every year. Investments in the future are being made, alliances are being created or reshuffled, new offerings and new technologies promise more efficiencies and greater versatility today and tomorrow.

New leaders are arriving on the world satellite scene, while the incumbents go from strength to strength. This refreshing of the market’s vision, coupled with the wisdom that comes from continuity and common sense, makes SATELLITE 2010 the place to be as we round the corner and enter a new era of prosperity and growth.

Believe me, it’s coming, and recent leading indicators suggest it could arrive sooner than later! You have got to be ready for “the next era” of communications via satellite . . .

By way of illustration, SATELLITE 2010 will provide a dynamic backdrop for some key anniversaries that also bear witness to the robust and ever-growing impact of communications via satellite. Way back in 1985, a new little company called Société Européenne des Satellites was incorporated in Luxembourg. Soon to celebrate its 25th anniversary, the recently reported financial results for this great company confirm that satellite remains a bright spot globally.

Another milestone coming up, within just a few weeks of the conclusion of SATELLITE 2010, is the 45th anniversary of the launch of Intelsat I, nicknamed Early Bird. From a modest 240 simultaneous voice circuits or one television channel over one bird in mid-1965, the global satellite-enabled marketplace today is the bedrock of worldwide communications services of virtually every stripe!

It’s important and not at all undignified to remind ourselves that we’re privileged to be part of a great marketplace with an exciting history behind us and a glorious future ahead. To pick just one example, the announcement in mid-July from Intelsat and Boeing for the purchase of four new satellites tells me that minds much bigger than my own are betting on satellite-enabled communications for decades to come.

Join me at SATELLITE 2010 and find out why!

Arianespace Launches JCSAT-12, Optus D3 Satellites
Arianespace launched the JCSAT-12 and Optus D3 satellites into geostationary transfer orbit using an Ariane 5-ECA launch vehicle, Arianespace announced Aug. 21.
JCSAT-12, designed and built by Lockheed Martin for Sky Perfect JSAT, is a hybrid satellite consisting of 30 Ku-band transponders and 12 C-band transponders, which aims to provide broadcast and broadband services to Japan, Oceania, the Asia-Pacific region and Hawaii.
Optus D3, manufactured by Orbital Sciences Corp. for Optus Communications, aims to provide fixed communications and direct television broadcasting services for Australia and New Zealand. The spacecraft is equipped with 32 Ku-band transponders, and will be located at the 156 degrees East orbital position.

Details of New Japanese Cost-Cutting Launch Vehicle Leaked
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is spending $213 million to develop a small launch vehicle in 2010 to reduce satellite launch costs by two-thirds, according to Nikkei reports, released Aug. 27.
JAXA is working with The Japanese Ministry of Science and Technology and IHI Corp. on the project.
The new three-stage rocket will be 24 meters in length and 2.5 meters in diameter at its widest section – less than half the size and carrying capacity of JAXA’s H-2A launch vehicle. The rocket will be able to carry payloads as heavy as 1.2 tons and use solid fuel for all three of its stages. JAXA claims that, since it will not have to fill up with liquid fuel, using solid fuel will cut down on the time that the rocket will need to prepare for liftoff once it arrives at the launch site.
Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) has a similar business model and mission in the United States. Falcon-1, SpaceX’s smaller launch vehicle, uses liquid fuel and costs between $8 and $10 million per launch.
JAXA’s new rocket would bring competition into Asia’s discount launch vehicle market, as China is also looking to provide cheaper launch services through its Long-March vehicle.
According to reports, the rocket will cost $32 million to produce and launch – less than a third of H-2A’s price tag. Falcon-1 missions currently cost between $8 and $10 million per launch.
The first liftoff is expected to take place as early as fiscal 2012 and will most likely be used to send space research and solar system satellites into orbit. Eventually, the new rocket may carry a landing vehicle for Japan’s Moon exploration project, targeted for 2020, the agencies said in the reports.

ProtoStar to Auction Satellites on Oct. 14
ProtoStar will sell its two satellites, ProtoStar 1 and ProtoStar 2, at an Oct. 14 auction, following a decision by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court of Delaware granting approval of the sale, according to court papers released Aug. 24.
The assets auction includes the two satellites plus related ground equipment, software and service contracts.
ProtoStar, owned by MHR Fund Management, New Enterprise Associates and Vantage Point Venture Partners, filed for bankruptcy in July, listing assets of $528 million and debt of $463 million, including units not in bankruptcy, as of Dec. 31.
The company’s deadline for bids is Oct. 8. After the auction, ProtoStar will request a hearing with the bankruptcy court to approve the sale between Oct. 19 and Oct. 23.
ProtoStar also requested the court’s permission to appoint a lead bidder for the assets. The court said the request would be considered at a later date.

Harris to Build Broadcast Manufacturing Facility in Brazil
Harris Corp. is setting up a television transmitter manufacturing presence in Brazil, the company announced Aug. 26.
Harris said it is considering a production location on Campinas — a region often referred to as the Brazilian Silicon Valley – and that the new operation will leverage several advantages of the region such as Mercosur trade agreements and Brazilian tax exemptions.
“Brazil is one of the five biggest media markets in the world, and we always knew we needed to have a strong presence there. This initiative is part of detailed, long-term strategy that Harris put in motion several years ago, with the plan being to launch once the DTV rollout gained momentum,” Harris Broadcast Communications President Tim Thorsteinson, said in a statement.

TerreStar Selects BroadSoft to Power Smartphone Service
TerreStar Networks selected BroadSoft’s BroadWorks Voice-over-IP (VoIP) application to power its new satellite Smartphone mobile broadband network service, TerreStar announced Aug. 19.
In July, TerreStar announced it completed an end-to-end VoIP call over the TerreStar-1 satellite using BroadWorks to route the call over TerreStar's all-IP core network.
TerreStar said it expects to launch the Smartphone service later this year and will market the device to rural communities and enterprises in need of complete coverage throughout the United States and Canada.
