Current Trends in the Satellite Marketplace

Scott Chase

Northern Sky Research chief executive Chris Baugh doesn’t sugarcoat it: “No issue is shaping public discourse as much as the current dismal state of financial and economic markets worldwide. News of financing difficulties, increased churn and subscriber losses are abundant across the telecom market and serve notice to an industry facing a very uncertain road ahead.”

But, he notes, “While satellite companies are not totally immune from such woes, the satellite industry is effectively carving out a series of growth opportunities surrounding specific markets and applications that all appear to be bucking any negative growth trend affecting other telecom sectors. The recent rash of harsh financial news has also not kept high profile satellite endeavors such as O3b and a wave of Ka-band satellites from continuing their plans to deploy on time.”

Two trends, Baugh says, are abundantly clear in the satellite market:

There are real, tangible opportunities for satellite companies to grow their business during difficult economic times. Whether it is high definition (HD) video for cable and DTH networks, or using satellites to backhaul cellular traffic around the world, there are some markets hitting the inflection point of the growth curve and generating increasing revenues.

The state of play across all telecom sectors is changing and increasingly incorporating satellite alongside other technologies. The historical competition between cable, DSL, fiber, wireless and satellite platforms is forever changed; now, coverage and applications matter, regardless of the technology utilized. Given the cost of enabling new coverage and applications to more users, satellites are used more frequently to extend networks around the world and thus generate real revenue.

Access Intelligence has again teamed with NSR to develop a series of sessions for SATELLITE 2009. These sessions point to the future state of play in the satellite-enabled marketplace and which applications and markets will generate opportunities during the current and projected economic climate. NSR’s has identified a core set of themes within each session, all of which will help conference attendees assess the opportunity at hand and plan accordingly for growth.

NSR’s track sessions for SATELLITE 2009 include:

• Satellite/Telco Truce: The End of the Platform Wars?
• WiMAX and Satellite Broadband: Competition or Co-existence?
• Mobile TV: The Cross-Platform Interplay
• Wireless Backhaul via Satellite- Enabling the Wireless Revolution
• Satellite Services Enabling Broadband on the Move
• HD Goes Global: Not Just for Wealthy Countries Any More

These sessions are a must-attend for anyone interested in specific growth areas for satellite technology and the drivers and restraints that will affect each opportunity over the long term.

“In the end,” Baugh concludes, “satellites are an indispensable means to reaching users worldwide, which is a trend that transcends economic and financial hurdles.”

Come see what we’re talking about at SATELLITE 2009.

Conference Update

SATELLITE 2009 Luncheon and Keynote Address Announced!
Hear SpaceX CEO and Entrepreneur, Elon Musk from 11:45 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 24, 2009

In an era when most technology based products follow a path of ever-increasing capability and reliability while simultaneously reducing costs, launch vehicles today are little changed from those of 40 years ago.

SpaceX aims to change this paradigm by developing a family of launch vehicles which will ultimately reduce the cost and increase the reliability of space access by a factor of ten. Coupled with the newly emerging market for private and commercial space transport, this new model will re-ignite humanity's efforts to explore and develop space.

Join us as SpaceX founder Elon Musk discusses the future of launch services, the progress of the SpaceX Falcon family of boosters, and the prospects for continued development of the global satellite-enabled marketplace.

All Full Conference and Pre-Conference attendees have access to the Luncheon. Click here to register to attend.  View the entire Conference Program.

SNG Broadcast Selects Genesis Networks For Live Delivery of London News

SNG Broadcast Services has chosen Genesis Networks to provide global connectivity for customers of SNG's live transmission services from London, SNG Broadcast announced Dec. 2.
Via the SNG Broadcast service, Genesis Networks' fiber-satellite infrastructure enables international broadcasters to transmit live news feeds from several of London's famous landmarks to newsrooms anywhere in the world.
In addition, SNG Broadcast is offering live mobile camera capabilities via a COFDM wireless link, which enables signals to be delivered from any major location from within central London. Each location is connected to a central hub from which the video and audio signals are handed off to the Genesis Networks' point of presence in London for delivery to media hubs throughout the world.
Through the Genesis service, SNG Broadcast said broadcasters would have connectivity to its fixed earth station services, which provide uplink, downlink, turnaround and playout/record services. Broadcasters with on-location satellite uplink trucks will be able to access mobile uplink signals via Genesis from the SNG hub.
