Just four weeks to go before the opening of SATELLITE 2009, and things are moving into high gear as we put the final touches on our annual gathering of the global satellite-enabled marketplace. When you’re getting ready to welcome more than 9,000 professionals and executives from around the world, everything needs to be in place to make sure that we deliver – and you get – as much value as possible from your stay in Washington, D.C.
A lot of colleagues have asked me how “the numbers” for SATELLITE 2009 are stacking up. I’m thrilled to tell you that registration is pacing ahead of last year, we have virtually sold out the exhibit hall floor, and we’re trying to fit in a few latecomers who know they need to be part of the biggest annual event for our community. Conference sessions have been in place for months; we will present about 300 experts, speakers, and moderators over four “can’t miss” days.
The global satellite-enabled marketplace is like a warm spring day at the end of March, a wonderful thing, full of surprise and opportunity. Who would have guessed a few weeks ago that an in-orbit collision of one operational and one moribund spacecraft would ignite agitated conversation beyond the select few who monitor orbital debris and calculate the almost impossible odds of contact?
Likewise, at this time last year only a small group of seers and pundits were thinking about the onset of global economic meltdown. Today it’s all around us, but the far-sighted are seeing a chance to increase marketshare, enhance reputation, implement new technologies and new systems and services, and generally build an advantage in a sector that traditionally has prospered during times of financial distress. After all, for better or worse, the need to communicate, across the hall or across continents, grows as uncertainty increases.
So times are good for satellite, especially for those with the drive to succeed, and the results to date for SATELLITE 2009 prove it. As everyone gets ready to batten down the hatches and do what it takes to survive the coming year, the most critical weapons in the arsenal of success are information and access.
And that’s what we’ll deliver at SATELLITE 2009 – information you can put to use right away, and access to leaders, partners, insights, colleagues and even competitors that will help you understand how the global satellite-enabled marketplace will prosper in the months and years to come.
Of course, 30 days to lift-off for SATELLITE 2009 means there’s still time to register for the conference and claim your place at the roundtable of decision makers and influencers of the satellite world. To paraphrase a well-known slogan, we’ll save a seat for you.
The decision to attend SATELLITE 2009 isn’t optional – it’s a must! I look forward to welcoming you to Washington, D.C. next month.
Congratulations to the winners of the “Power Play promotion” for receiving tickets to the Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Washington Capitals NHL Game on Friday, March 27 at 7:00pm!
William Chapin, Telecom Engineer, NOAA/RCG
Peter Gamba, Director, IRS-TV
Todd Waylan, Sr. Architect, AT&T Government Solutions
We look forward to seeing you at SATELLITE 2009!

Space Principles for Satellite Professionals
Pre-Conference Program
Tuesday, March 24
On February 10, 2009, an active commercial satellite and an expired Russian Cosmos spacecraft apparently tried to cross the same point in space at the same time. Both vehicles were traveling at about 16,800 MPH (26,800 KPH), with a closing speed approaching 25,000 MPH. The collision produced a vast cloud containing hundreds of large and thousands of smaller vehicle pieces that will populate low Earth orbits for up to several centuries. This was a landmark event that changed the way we think about space debris. Prior to this, space junk was thought of as a nuisance that simply required avoidance. Now, with the first instance of two full spacecraft colliding at an altitude of 490 miles, the risk to other satellites has greatly increased.
This was not an isolated event, but the beginning of a chain reaction which could lead to the total denial of access to space. Every space user is affected by this catastrophic event, all space services could eventually be permanently lost. In view of this new and dangerous threat to all satellites, Launchspace is adding a special segment to the March 24th seminar, Space Principles for Satellite Professionals, in which one of the leading experts on the long-term implications of space debris will discuss what the satellite industry needs to know regarding the why, what and how of a potential worldwide disaster. This discussion will include a look at the current situation, what the government is, and is not, doing to manage the growth of debris. A number of promising solutions will be aired, and everyone in the seminar will leave with a new sense of urgency and understanding regarding the importance of dealing with the debris issue.

Sri Lanka Announces Planned First and Second Satellite
Sri Lanka is set to launch its first satellite in 2009, a spacecraft named after science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke, Sri Lankan government officials confirmed in a press announcement released Feb. 16. “Our exclusive economic zone will probably expand this year from 200 nautical miles to about 800 nautical miles,” Sri Lankan Telecommunication Regulatory Commission Director General Priyantha Kariyapperuma, said in a statement. “The most efficient and cost effective way to monitor such a large expanse of ocean will be to use the [low-Earth orbit] satellite. … We can use the [spacecraft] for imagery and disaster management by collaborating with [low-Earth orbit] satellite clusters of other countries.” Kariyapperuma also confirmed that a second satellite, a geostationary spacecraft, would follow. “The satellites will be used to develop our communications sector. We are talking to a number of satellite manufacturers but we have not finalized plans yet,” Kariyapperuma said. The Sri Lankan government has not named any potential partners, manufacturers or financiers but said it is exploring public-private partnerships and foreign assistance to launch the satellites. The first satellite is expected to cost about $20 million, with the second estimated at about $100 million, Kariyapperuma said.
KVH, ViaSat Expand Mini-VSAT Broadband to Persian Gulf
KVH and ViaSat have expanded their mini-VSAT Broadband service to service enterprise operations in the Persian Gulf, the companies announced Feb. 17. The expansion also extends the ViaSat Yonder mobile network for in-flight broadband to business and commercial aircraft. The move comes as both KVH and ViaSat aim to provide seamless mobile Ku-band broadband connections worldwide and follows the recent rollout of service to the northern Pacific Ocean. “The addition of mini-VSAT Broadband coverage for the Persian Gulf enables us to provide more affordable broadband Internet for critical commercial and government maritime operations as well as leisure vessels in the region,” Brent Bruun, KVH’s vice president of sales and business development, said in a statement. “Ship operators are looking for cost effectiveness in an increasingly competitive market, and the TracPhone V7 and mini-VSAT Broadband service offer lower hardware, installation, and airtime costs than competing services in the Persian Gulf.”
