These days, with all the focus on return on investment, smart spending and buying, face-to-face interaction with customers and the like, being able to position yourself among satellite technology leaders has never been more important. The components of positioning – presence at live events, strategic and tactical advertising, thoughtful introduction of new or enhanced products and services, and an intelligent and structured outreach to the trade press and other media, remain constant even as the economy, technology, and markets change.
So it is with the SATELLITE show – for about 30 years we’ve put together an annual conference and exhibition which each and every year has grown in stature and relevance. And we couldn’t have done it without you!
Share with me this passage from a new and fascinating book about the evolution of the world VSAT industry and the growth of an idea from five comrades in Israel, the founders of Gilat, into a global VSAT leader. In “A gun in a battle of knives,” pioneer executive Yoel Gat offers this powerful assessment of the impact of a trade show:
“Companies invest a great deal of thought and preparation on the announcement of a new product. Spacenet indeed chose the right time for an announcement of our joint endeavor: a big communications exhibition in Washington, D.C., on January 28, 1992. Within the space of a couple of days, the company issued a press release, convened a press conference, and introduced the product to the entire world.
“In parallel, PR people pushed the story to as many media outlets as possible. Spacenet invested hundreds of thousands of dollars on the product launch and the interest it generated was enormous. Hundreds of people stopped by their booth . . .”
I’m not proposing that you need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars – what I am saying is that you have to be where the industry is, you need to move among the global and national and market segment leaders of communications via satellite in their chosen environment, and you must deploy wisely the budget you do have on the legs of the outreach stool – live events, face-to-face meetings, print and e-advertising, PR and media relations, product presentation, the occasional road show.
Inaugurations aren’t the only big events in Washington in January. Since that wonderful 1992 SATELLITE show 17 years ago, the satellite-enabled marketplace has grown by leaps and bounds. We’ve helped lead the way and also managed to move the top global event for our community out from the clutches of deep winter and into – weather permitting, we hope – the warm embrace of late March.
Join us at SATELLITE 2009 – Yoel Gat will be there talking about his new venture and new product when you arrive. And so will thousands of others! Make sure you count yourself among the smart ones . . .

The contract leases two transponders for broadcasting by RAI, Italy's national public broadcaster, until 2020. Currently broadcasting via Hot Bird 8, the RAI channels will transfer to Eutelsat's new Hot Bird 9 satellite when it begins commercial service in February. "Telespazio is ready to pursue a long partnership with RAI and Eutelsat. PCI Provides Satcom to Afghansitan via Australia
Proactive Communications Inc. (PCI) signed a $2 million contract negotiation with Australian-based operator NewSat to provide a unified communications solution to customers in Afghanistan, PCI announced Jan. 20. The three-year deal will expand PCI's satellite coverage across Southwest Asia and North Africa. PCI said the contract was driven by difficulties in securing satellite bandwidth in these regions, turning to Australia as a solution. PCI expects to be able to offer full voice, video, data and collaboration capabilities in its 2009 first quarter.
GlobeCast Helping BBC with Persian TV
GlobeCast signed a distribution deal with BBC World Service for the launch of a Persian TV channel, the company announced Jan. 16. GlobeCast will be the BBC's distribution partner for the launch of its Farsi-language BBC Persian TV the Telstar 12 and HotBird 6 satellites. Persian TV will be available to IPTV, DTH and cable operators across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. GlobeCast receives the BBC Persian TV signal direct from the BBC World Service at Bush House in Central London before sending the signal via its international fibre network to two different locations for broadcast. For broadcast across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, GlobeCast uses capacity on the Telstar 12 satellite at 15 degrees West. The signal is sent by fibre to New York where leading satellite service company Globecomm picks it up and sends it to its Long Island teleport for uplink.
Furuno Enters MVSAT Market with Help from Eutelsat, SpeedCast
Eutelsat Communications and SpeedCast signed a commercial agreement with maritime equipment supplier Furuno to provide auto beam switching Ku-band broadband maritime service, satellite capacity and teleport services to support Furuno's SafeComNet service, Furuno announced Jan. 14. SafeComNet provides maritime fleets with communications across major shipping lanes and regions covered by Eutelsat and AsiaSat Ku-band satellites. The service targets operators of merchant shipping and fishing fleets who want to integrate enhanced on-board applications. The satellite-based broadband service also aims to enable secure offshore virtual private networks to be established with land-based offices so a vessel can become a mobile office fully integrated into an overall network.
Compared with 2.4 meter C-band systems, Furuno said Ku-band antennas will reduce equipment costs by more than 50 percent and space occupied on deck by more than 60 percent. Freddie Hansen, managing director of Furuno Denmark, said the push into the MVSAT market was in response to growing demand. "Our partnership allows us to combine hardware offered by Furuno with satellite airtime services for our one-stop-shop solution of all-inclusive satellite-based broadband communications services. Our cooperation with Eutelsat and SpeedCast will help improve the connectivity at sea required by an increasing number of ship-owners worldwide," he said in a statement.
EADS Astrium Acquires SSTL
EADS Astrium completed its acquisition of Surrey Satellites Technology Ltd.(SSTL), EADS CEO Louis Gallois confirmed at a press conference Jan. 13. This follows approval from the European Commission (EC), granted in December, and a decision by the University of Surrey to sell its majority stake of 85 percent in the small satellite manufacturer. SSTL will remain an independent U.K. company with its individual brand and approach to space. "The UK space industry is in a strong position at present," Colin Paynter, Astrium's CEO, said in a statement. "At Astrium we have a healthy order book and we are recruiting engineers, scientists and technicians to build telecommunication and scientific satellites. Acquiring SSTL means we will have a substantial complement to what we can offer customers around the world. SSTL has expertise in small satellites and an innovative approach to developing new markets for space."
