The relentless march of time suddenly brings us to just five weeks until SATELLITE 2008: The Sixth Decade. That’s the trouble with deadlines – no matter how far out they once seemed, sooner or later, today’s the day.
And today really is the day to register for the most important, widest ranging, conference event of the year. You simply can’t afford to miss the top annual international gathering for satellite-enabled communications professionals.
At a recent holiday bash, I bumped into one of the SATELLITE 2008 session leaders who asked me to outline the duties of our moderators. The moderators are in front of our guests for one reason, and one reason only – to provoke, guide, and facilitate audience participation and active questioning of our experts on the podium.
In fact, I’d be thrilled if all the moderators had to do was introduce the speakers, offer a unifying theme for discussion, and then open the floor for questions from attendees.
How else – and where else – are you personally and directly going to ask SES Global CEO Romain Bausch what his plans are for new satellite capacity? Or Thales Alenia Space CEO Pascale Sourisse what the future is for Ka-band commercial broadband services? When will you get a chance to quiz Sea Launch top exec Rob Peckham on his launch vehicle’s return to flight? Where can you listen in on the top ground segment CEOs as they divvy up the global struggle for technology innovation and global marketshare? When will you get the chance to ask broadcasters what they predict in terms of future bandwidth demand?
And how else can you gauge the concerns and questions of your competitors if you’re not in the room with them?
The answers to all these queries – except the very last one – can be found at SATELLITE 2008: The Sixth Decade. It’s the “being there” that you have to decide on, and quickly! As we move into the next era of satellite-enabled communications and instantaneous global connectivity, you need to be able to contribute at the highest levels to the dialog and the direction of this industry.
You need to arm yourself with information! Register Today and save with advance registration discounts!

For 7 years, the DSTS-G contract has been the primary means by which the DoD has contracted for commercial satellite services. The DSTS-G contract is due to expire in 2011 and an active debate has already begun on how to structure the follow-on contract. In this lively discussion, satellite operators, integrators, and manufacturers will debate the future of DoD leasing, management, and oversight of commercial satcom usage.
Moderator:
Rebecca Cowen-Hirsch, Director, PEO SATCOM, Teleport & Services, Defense Information Systems Agency
Speakers:
Abbas Yazdani, President, Artel
Tom Eaton, President, Arrowhead Global Solutions
Ron Samuel, COO, Eutelsat
Howard Zach, Business Development, Boeing Service Company

Harris Wins $410 Million U.S. Air Force Contract
Harris Corp. was awarded a $410 million contract to provide operations and maintenance support to the U.S. Air Force, Harris announced Jan. 15.
Harris was selected for the Network and Space Operations and Maintenance (NSOM) program, which contains a base contract and six options that bring the potential overall value to $410 million over six and a half years. Harris will provide operations and maintenance support to the 50th Space Wing's Air Force Satellite Control Network (AFSCN) at locations around the world.
In 2000, Harris was awarded the original Operational Space Services and Support (OSSS) program for the 50th Space Wing. Under the OSSS contract, Harris has been providing operations, maintenance and support services to the AFSCN and Global Positioning System (GPS) ground networks, including organizational level maintenance at all ground stations assigned to the AFSCN and GPS networks.

iDirect Wins Asian Broadband Contract
iDirect has signed a deal with Australian Satellite Communications, which will help the operator expand its services into other parts of the Asia, the companies announced Jan. 13. Australian Satellite Communications will install an iDirect 5IF satellite hub on the U.S. west coast to expand its services in the Asia Pacific market. The broadband provider, which already serves a major segment of the Asia Pacific region based on the iDirect platform, plans to introduce both Ku-Band and C-Band services, covering Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands.
The investment is a response to rising demand for IP broadband in critical areas of the Asia Pacific region that have been underserved to date. The expanded coverage allows Australian Satellite Communications to provide high-speed connectivity to the oil and gas and maritime industries, supporting bandwidth-intensive IP applications that must function in real time.
ABS Makes Supreme Deal
Asia Broadcast Satellite (ABS) has signed a multiyear capacity deal with Supreme Master Television, the company announced Jan. 14.
