What's Your New Year's Resolution?

Scott Chase

One recurring New Year’s resolution that was always easy to keep, thanks to SATELLITE, was to get myself “all caught up” on the industry I covered nearly microscopically for nearly two decades.

These days, the challenge of understanding fully this dynamic marketplace has become much more complex, but the solution has remained the same. Deciding to attend SATELLITE 2008 is, in effect, a priceless shortcut to reaching all of the key executives and market data across the expanding frontiers of satellite-enabled communications. And SATELLITE 2008 is set up to allow all conference registrants to focus on their core concerns and competencies while at the same time reserving the opportunity to dip in and out of market niches that are of growing interest!

An example from my own quarter century in the business: Way back when, the military element of communications via satellite was a governmental affair. The commercial side of the business really didn’t see dollars at the end of that rainbow. There was no “COTS” component to pursue, bid for, or serve. Sure, everyone knew that government requirements helped drive innovation and capability, but a real “church and state” separation prevailed. That’s all changed today, with folks all over town vying for a piece of the “milsatcom” pie.

And thus we have a well-regarded two-day Military Forum, bringing together the experts and market-markers that define opportunity in this important component of the business. Likewise, just a decade or so ago, Mobile Satellite Services were more the province of dreamers and visionaries than bean counters and CEOs. Today, everyone is – or wants to be – in on the MSS action. And thus we have an all-new one-day MSS Forum debuting at SATELLITE 2008.

For the time-tested Broadcast and Enterprise markets, covering the traditional triumvirate of video, voice and data in all of their established as well as evolving applications, SATELLITE 2008 proudly presents structured two-day forums designed to not only get you caught up, but indeed to propel you toward new business, new ideas, new profit centers. For the Teleport and Emerging Regions arenas, there are sessions upon sessions touching all the bases you need to be successful.

All of this, and more, waits for you at SATELLITE 2008, February 25-28, 2008, in Washington, D.C. As in years past, when the final curtain falls on the last session, and as we say goodbye to friends old and new, I’ll be able to strike one New Year’s resolution from my “to do” list. I’ll be armed and ready to move forward confidently into the sixth decade of satellite-enabled communications.

Army Orders Satellite Equipment From Comtech

Comtech Telecommunications Corp. received orders from the U.S. Army Communications Electronics Command for satellite equipment, Comtech Telecommunications Corp. announced Jan. 3.

Under the $17.7 million contract, subsidiary Comtech Mobile Datacom Corp. will provide mobile satellite transceivers, satellite bandwidth, satellite network operations, engineering services and program management to the Force 21 Battle Command Brigade and Below-Blue Force Tracking program, a battle command real-time situational awareness and control system.

The orders are expected to be completed by June 30.

Sea Launch Reschedules Thuraya-3 Mission

Sea Launch will make its next attempt to launch the Thuraya-3 satellite Jan. 15, Sea Launch announced.

Sea Launch attempted to conduct the mission, the first since the launch operator suffered a failure in January 2007, in November, but the effort was unsuccessful due to unusually strong currents at the launch site. Sea Launch has increased power and fuel capabilities on its launch platform and evaluated the use of existing margins on identified launch parameters in order to enhance its potential to perform the mission.

Thuraya-3, designed by the Boeing Co., will provide a range of mobile voice and data services over large geographic regions. Thuraya Satellite Communications Co. will expand commercially into the Asia-Pacific market when Turaya-3 becomes operational.

EchoStar Completes Split Of Company

EchoStar Communications Corp. has split into two businesses, effective Jan. 1, the company announced.
Under the plan, unveiled in September, EchoStar will change its name to Dish Network Corp. and retain the pay-TV business and Dish Network. EchoStar Holding Corp. will hold the technology infrastructure, which includes EchoStar's satellites, uplink centers and spectrum licenses not considered core to Dish Network's subscriber business, as well as the set-top box business and certain satellite assets used to provide fixed satellite services to third parties and international operations.

Each shareholder of EchoStar Communications Corp. will receive 0.20 of a share of EchoStar Holding Corp. stock, which began trade on the Nasdaq market Jan. 2.

Charlie Ergen will continue to serve as chairman and CEO of Dish Network and the spin-off company.

Rascom-QAF1 Suffers Helium Leak

The Rascom-QAF1 satellite is suffering a helium leak and operations have been halted, satellite manufacturer Thales Alenia Space announced Dec. 29.

The satellite, placed into orbit Dec. 21 by Arianespace, was put in a stable configuration, and Thales Alenia Space is conducting an analysis. A decision as to what to do next will be made “shortly,” the company said.

Rascom-QAF1 satellite carries 12 Ku-band and eight C-band transponders intended to provide telecommunications services in rural parts of Africa as well as domestic and international connections, direct TV broadcast services and Internet access.

CommScope Completes Acquisition Of Andrew

CommScope Inc. completed its $2.7 billion acquisition of Andrew Corp., CommScope announced Dec. 27.

“We believe this combination will further enhance CommScope’s position as a worldwide leader in last mile solutions,” Frank Drendel, chairman and CEO of CommScope, said in a statement. “Combining our innovative technologies, premier brands and a top-tier customer base, we expect to expand our global service model and create an enhanced offering of communications infrastructure solutions that addresses a broader spectrum of customer needs.”

Andrew stockholders will receive $13.50 in cash and 0.03 shares of CommScope common stock for each Andrew share. CommScope expects to generate annual cost savings of about $90 million to $100 million in the second full year of operations. Andrew will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary.
