NSSLGlobal Demos Wi-Fi for British Royal Navy, Enables Maritime BYOD

[Via Satellite 10-13-2015] The British Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary are trialing Wi-Fi service from satellite communications provider NSSLGlobal on a select number of ships. The service uses technology augmented from NSSLGlobal’s commercial shipping sector for the Royal Navy, and enables crew to use their personal devices to connect with friends and family for the first time.

The Wi-Fi service is an all-in-one access control facility deployed as a gateway for managing Wi-Fi hotspots to enable Bring your own Device (BYOD) to be rolled out to naval vessels. NSSLGlobal provides secure broadband connectivity through satellite, Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) or 3G/4G. The service has coverage across the main recreational areas of the vessel.

“Whilst Navy vessels are officially exempt from Maritime Labor Convention 2006 (MLC:2006) the Navy recognizes the importance to morale and productivity of enabling personnel to stay in contact with friends and family whilst at sea,” said Sally-Anne Ray, managing director of NSSLGlobal.
