By Jeffrey Hill | April 19, 2011

[Satellite TODAY 04-19-11] ASRC Aerospace Corp. was awarded a contract from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) to operate and maintain the agency’s Fairbanks Satellite Operations Facility in Alaska, NOAA announced April 18.
ASRC Aerospace will maintain operations, test and upgrade equipment and monitor software to provide support of the NOAA ground station systems and subsystems. The contract contains four one-year option periods for a total potential value of $34.3 million.
The facility compiles data from a variety of satellites, including: NOAA’s geostationary and polar-orbiting spacecraft; the U.S. Department of Defense’s Meteorological Satellite Program; NASA’s Earth observing satellites; and international environmental satellites. The facility will be one of the data receptor sites for the Joint Polar Satellite System, which is being developed by NOAA with technical assistance from NASA to provide data for weather forecasting.
